Does anybody use this PPC strategy?

So I started my adwords account yesterday, and I have to say...

... The price per click for most good keywords seems fairly high. There are some keywords I'm interested in that I can get for about 50 cents, and I'm willing to pay up to 2 bucks a click for certain other keywords, but on the whole, the 5 bucks a click I'm seeing for some keywords is pretty prohibitive for me, at least at this point.

However, I've been thinking of a PPC cost minimization strategy that might let me get pretty decent traffic for cheap, and it's this:

Advertising on guru names or product names related to the niche, rather than the specific keywords that describe the niche itself.

Okay, so I'm sure somebody's thought of this before, but anyway, I still want to talk about it.

I have done some keyword research for internet marketing. As it turns out, to advertise on the term "internet marketing" itself is pretty expensive: roughly $5 per click.

However, you can advertise on THESE terms for way less:

sell information products: $1.30

make money online: $1.40

creating information products: $0.69

mmo: $0.44 (!!!)

And yet, I do notice that when I search these terms myself, I do not see as many ads as I do with other terms. So does that mean that I'm not going to be seen as much if I advertise on these terms?

Maybe you should take a look mmo, or maybe not. As a guy who used to play games a lot, mmo stands for Massive Multiplayer Online. MMO games are things like World of Warcraft (WoW).

It may or may not help the niche you are tapping into. I just wanted to share that tidbit of info.

Yeah I knew that, I figured like a quarter of the traffic to the term would be people looking for "make money online"

why dont you wanna go for long tail "buying mode" keywords cheaper with less competition... "internet marketing" is an obvious keyword and everyone who can goes for such keywords.. therefore the competition and the price.. am i right guys?

plus the price on later bids is influenced by how much is your ad and the website that it points to, relevant to the search quarry.. you can see it over time in lunched campaigns: as the CTR plummets, the price goes upp

    Andy,

When goto.com, then Overture and then Google first started their ppc platforms this was a common strategy.

The problem today is Google's insistence on "relevance" being determined not by the marketer or the target audience (or even common sense), but by a "match" of the keyword to what is in the ad and then on the landing page.

So if you bid on Frank Kern's name, but the ad is for your product on your website, Google will either not let it run or the dismal quality score will drive your cost through the roof.

Since you just started your Adwords account, here are some tips to keep it from quickly being banned:

    - Do not advertise ClickBank products

    - Do not advertise Internet marketing products. You may want to pay careful attention to what products and services are advertised for the IM keywords you mentioned - and what are not.

    - Be wary of any keyword that does not already have a few ads showing. It could mean it is 'ban bait'.
