I'm based in the UK and my wife wants to start a local business.

Is it best to purchase the co.uk or should I stick with .com version of the domain name. I've been told that the .com version is worth a lot more and/or is more appealing if i decide to sell the site in the future.

I have web hosting with a company called Powweb whose servers are in the US, would hosting the site with them affect page rank, etc? Should I host with UK based hosting company?

What should I do the get the site ranking quickly and higher?

Nope. A .com only has higher perceived value. Google treats all domain extensions equally. EXCEPT that Google does pay attention to extensions when it comes to local searches. It would be better for you to get a co.uk extension if you want mainly local traffic.

In terms of SEO value, you will find it beneficial to get a .co.uk domain and have your hosting in the UK. Bare in mind, these aren't significant ranking factors though, just a bonus.

Just to add to the above, if you want to go for a .com domain - make sure to sign up to Google webmaster tools and tell Google you want to target UK users.
