The basics of SEO for my new website

Hi madscientist, welcome aboard the SEO train. I commend you for working hard to try and understand search engine optimization. The basics of SEO are that you have on-page and off page and you need to become fairly proficient in both.

First make sure you do good keyword research to find proper keywords to target. Then make sure that you use that main keyword in your h1 tag on your webpage. Keep the title short sweet and to the point make it catchy!

Only focus on optimizing one keyword for each webpage. However do make sure to include some related keywords as well. Google likes this. Have your main keyword in your h2, h3 and once bolded on your page.

Make sure you link to one of your other pages on the same website (inner link) with your main keyword. Include at least one image and change the alt text to your main keyword. You can also upload it with a file name including your main keyword if you want.

Check your main keywords density to make sure it is within 2-5%

These are all on page factors and the basics. Next start creating links to your webpage and use your main keyword most of the time. Create a couple Web 2.0 sites like Wordpress.com, squidoo, etc. These are free high PR sites that allow you to create real estate on them and link back a couple times to the web page you are trying to rank for.

Create some social bookmarking links and start posting regularly in forums related to the market you are in. After a week or two and several posts put your webpage URL in your forum signature and make sure to use the anchor text of your main keyword (if its allowed. Don't waste your time with forums that don't allow anchor text in the signature.
