DOMAIN NAME CHOICE FOR A LOCAL BUSINESS

I have a doubt about the right domain name to choose.

I'm about to create a site for a restaurant. Being a local business I want to have the name of the town in the domain and obviously the name of the restaurant.

But what about the word "restaurant" itself?

for example, for the restaurant named "L'Escargot" located in Bradford which name is better:

lescargotbradford.com or
lescargotrestaurantbradford.com

Is the second too long? which one is better for seo purposes?

The client doesn't care about it so I have the complete choice. I wanted to buy the first one but at a second thought I started wondering if missing the word restaurant could penalise the search result.

What do you think about it? Any expert's tip?

The word 'restaurant' in the domain name will help with SEO but it may seem a little long for people to type. The fact that you have the name of the town in the url will probably help you out (locally) far better than any use of the word 'restaurant'. What is your plan?
    1. Build local traffic to the restaurant
    2. Build international traffic to the restaurant

I'm guessing it's #1. In that case, I wouldn't bother with the word restaurant. I would make sure 'restaurant' is sprinkled on the website though. Just my .02

You can do one thing just purchase the Domain name with the brand name and then do its On Page and Off Page according to the word "Restaurant".

Simply put all the keywords for which you want rankings use them in Title, Header, Description and more. Do Off Page for the website with the specific keywords. It will be more beneficial one that if a Brand Name is appear on top for a particular keyword. Just user click on that brand. As Keyword specific domain is also not bad but still you can do what i wrote. Otherwise as what your client's satisfaction says is good.
thanks guys for your replies. It solved my query too... not for "Restaurant" word but for other one.

You can opt for no 1 and get it ranked for the city with brand name also. Word restaurant can be used in your site's content and meta keywords as on-page SEO to rank it also.

Are you looking to brand the restaurant name or are you looking for search engine traffic to find the site easier? This would make a difference in the domain name you choose.

If you're looking for a broader base of people finding the site, you may want to consider the type of restaurant and the city name as opposed to the restaurant name. Something like FrenchRestaurantBradford.com. This will get the attention of people looking for a French restaurant in general. It's also great for mobile users who are visiting the city and are looking for a "type" of restaurant as opposed to the name of the restaurant which they may or may not know.

Of course, since domain names are cheap, you could also purchase the restaurant name and work on branding it.

lescargotrestaurantbradford.com will rank easier, but don't stress about it because it's your onpage SEO and quality backlinks that will get you ranked. I've just Googled "restaurants in bradford" and the competition is pretty weak, you would need a good Google listings though as I'm seeing a 7 block.

    BRAND NAME!!!

That shouldn't even come into question.

Just because you don't have an exact, phrase or heck even a BROAD match domain does "not" mean you can't still rank that website into position 1.

That one word you suggest can DEVALUE so much.

thank you all for the reply!

I cannot go with only the brand: it's a common word and all the suffixes (com, net, org, info, along with the local ones) have been already taken.

Moreover, there are other business in the town with the same name,

@Mbullard, you guessed right: What I really want to do is to reach a good search position so that people typing restaurant and the town name, has it as one of the first choice.

the long name looks so long.... and despite the French name it's international cusine..... I suppose I should go the the short name

I don't think there's any real need to have Bradford in the domain, the short one looks good, if you only want UK traffic you can specify this in Googles webmaster tools and of course a places listing. A .co.uk extension helps with rankings, but I've never had a problem with .com either for ranking local sites here in the UK, or is this Bradford US?

I have local sites that rank #1 on google with certain keywords. Build the brand. You don't need the name of the town or even "restaurant" in the domain name.

Big key here: In the meta tag under keywords make sure you use the name of the town/city, the word "restaurant", the name of the establishment in your keywords as well as other "fine eating establishment" (hint, hint) keywords.

Also make sure you put a "description" in the meta tag of your page describing the fine points of the restaurant.

After that have a few pages of good content, a few links and you should rank quite well.

    Give us more information.

Its difficult to answer your question accurately with the information you have provided.

    Whats the restaurant name?
    Whats the town name?
What domains are you actually considering?

I mean that he desn't know anything about web, he told me to follow the best way to help his clients to find him (presently the restaurant's name shows up in national directories with wrong telephone numbers) and get new clients.

The name and town I wrote aren't real (I'd rather not write here the real ones) but the number of characters are nearly the same (16 in the first case and 26 in the second - in my example I now realize that are 17 and 27).

I'm allowed to buy the .com and the national one. The town is small but is a touristic one. There are lots of restaurants and the online competition is relatively big, but not so strong, I cannot find any site really well optimized. But I will have to fight against national directories (those with reviews about restaurants) which show even when they don't have any review about this particulasr restaurant.

Doing SEO for a real business is different than doing SEO for internet marketers. I would not even consider putting the town name in the URL. The shorter the better, and I would focus on the brand name. I know you said the brand is taken.

As long as it is not trademarked, I would look at options like

        thebrandname.com
        brandnamecuisine.com
        brandnamedining.com
brandnamerestaurant.com (might be getting a bit long there)
        brand-name.com

Ranking local businesses is not extremely difficult. Do not lean on crutches like keyword rich domain names that no customer is ever going to remember.

Also, if the .com is not available, go for something else. Nothing to do with SEO, but the last thing you want to do is build up their brand when someone else owns the .com.
