Facebook like site URL or Facebook fan page?

This could actually be an interesting discussion... here's the predicament:

Do you think its more optimal for people to like your site URL or is it better to just send those likes to your fan page? For example, on my blog, I have a like button for my fan page, so if someone likes the website overall, it makes them a fan of the website -- whereas for individual articles, the like button is obviously for the article URL.

I've been thinking for a while now though of whether or not I should switch that up with liking just the site URL... but haven't been able to make up my mind (thus the reason for the thread).

Now, do you believe its more beneficial to have people like the URL or to just send those likes to the fan page? Any effect on SEO either way? Do you think liking a URL will boost up SERP's or help SEO in anyway (over liking the fan page)? Share your opinions/experiences here and what you recommend.

I think that it would probably only help the ranking of the article a little tiny bit if a couple of people shared it on Facebook as well as liked it. If every article was pointed towards the fan page, it would only really help if the fan page had a title that was competing for a popular Google search. Likes are do follow cross links within Facebook which can help the rankings of a Facebook page on Google, more so than a page outside Facebook, and they don't get all that much traffic by themselves from posts showing up in the news feed, compared to say Twitter. I'd say you might even be better of trying to get people to tweet your page rather than like it.
