Keywords to target on Web 2.0 sites

Let's say I am targeting 'red widgets' as my primary keyword on my money site, so I have this site optimized for 'red widgets'. Then I create pages on web 2.0 sites like Squidoo, Hub Pages etc to link back to my main site, using 'red widgets' as my anchor text.

My question is, should I optimize 'my web 2.0 sites for 'red widgets' as well? Or for a related (but different) keyword?

If I'm trying to get my money site to the top of the search engines, I'm thinking it doesn't make sense to set up another site competing for exactly the same keyword...

Optimize for very similar keywords but not identical.

Do some keyword research for "red widgets" and find the top keywords that are directly related to that keyword and then optimize for those. That will give you the best results and avoid any red flags.

    Good luck!

From personal experience I find that with web 2.0 sites like HubPages I receive more SEO benefit from a page that is ranking for the same word as I am targeting. I actually wait a little while before creating my backlink and put all my hubs on the same HubPages account.

This does not work so well for high traffic works or extremely difficult words to rank, although it can be used alongside other SEO efforts.

The reason why I do promote using a Hub for the same word is because those Hubs gain pagerank. So a page that ranks on Google and has a pagerank with a dofollow link to your site has to be worth something.

I can understand the logic of this, but is the danger not that the web 2.0 site outranks your money site?

Not if you rank higher than 80 on your profile. They become do follow.

You are linking to your site with the contextual link for the keyword you want to rank for. Mathematically it would seem that if its calling on you as a higher authority by linking to you for that very same keyword then you would benefit in the end and ultimately rank higher, not to mention you will be doing backlinking to your web page and not to your Hubpage.

That's absolutely right, and especially for web 2.0 sites, try not to post a link to your website until about 10 days have passed and you've made a few posts on the site that don't have links in them. That's where Se Nuke works wonders.
