Commonly, people do keyword research using free or paid tools such google keyword tools or market samurai.

There is another method to grab keyword list and quality is very good. The method is to spy keyword list of website which appear in Top Google SERP. Just type search on google and open the top three ranking website, and click view page source on your browser and find keywords at meta tag, as below.

<meta name="keywords" content="Best Weight Loss Program, Weight Loss Reviews, Diets That Work" />

It is the proven keyword that they use to rank in Google that you can follow it.

manual procedure is consuming a lot of time, therefore recommended to use tools web data extractor, many tools available, just search on google with keyword like "data extractor", "data crawler" , usually paid tools but you can use it free trial.

This method is effective, because you grab keyword which has been proven to put website on Top SERP.

I thought Google had reduced the weight it applied to the meta keywords and meta description.

You can duplicate the meta stuff from your competitors on Google and if you dont have many incoming links (and all the other stuff Google looks at) you still wont rank.

I've been running sites since 2005 (not always very succesfully I must admit ha ha) and the only consistent thing I've noticed is my meta description is used on the SERP as the first bit of blurb on my listing so I'm careful to include a call to action in that.

    Cheers

SEMRush is the best tool to see which keywords a website is actually ranking for. If you enter in a website in SEMRush, it will actually show you which rankings are sending the most traffic to a site. Very useful tool if you ask me.
