How long does it take to get page ranking

Just wondering how long it takes to get a good page ranking in google. I would like to do up a blog promoting affiliate links and is this the best way to go about making money online?

    It's different for every keyword depending on a number of factors, mainly competition.

    I've had some sites rank in 3 months, some in 6 months, some take 9 months, and a few never rank at all.

    One of my sites took 10 months to rank, but now it's sitting nicely at #3 on page one and getting me around 3,500 highly targeted visitors a month.

      Backlinking, backlinking, backlinking....

      Create links, with your keywords as the anchor text where possible, through forum posts, blog commenting, article submissions, posting on Web 2.0 sites, etc. The more related these are to your niche, the more link juice your site will get. These are all free if you do them yourself, they just take time.
