Go with whatever you feel is best. Both have their strengths.

I tend to prefer larger sites. They take longer to get going, requires more work and with time they get easier to promote and manage. In the end, rankings are more stable and revenue higher.

Now in the same time, you can setup a few smaller sites. That's how I start all my sites just to see their potential. The ones that make less than $1k per month, I sell. The ones that make more + potential I keep and grow.

It all depends on the time and resource you have to put upfront. If you need quick money(less money)/less work then you should go for multiple niche site but if you are looking at the long term goal with lots of gains monetarily then i suggest mega sites.

It takes a lot more financial and time-related resources to build a series of niche stores. Building a search engine friendly website is a must but it's going to cost you. Real search engine optimization isn't cheap and you'll have to have an SEO approach for each site. For example, link building will have to be multiplied by the number of sites you plan to develop. Also, if you recently purchased the new domain names, each store will lack a "history" which is a point against them. On the other hand, if your main keywords are highly competitive a niche store may help you in many ways from an SEO perspective.

Is it possible to create one site and just create content about everything under the sun..would that work ?...or would Google see that type of site as not being targeted enough ?

Depends on what keywords you're going after. X-Factor, who is a HIGHLY respected AdSense guru that participates on here, swears by setting up hundreds of micro-niche sites. If the keywords are super easy to rank for you buy an exact match domain, get it ranked and do a little maintenance/link building over the long term. Easy money. Authority sites on the other hand take much more time and effort but are more suited for competitive keywords, as you will have more pages indexed and more IBLs coming to the overall domain.

With Google cracking down on low quality sites, it pays to build authority sites for long term stable income. However, building authority sites from scratch needs a lot of time and resources.

I used to build tons of niches sites in the past but many are affected by panda update.

Nowadays, I started to build authority sites but without the hard work of building backlinks. By acquiring expired domains, I managed to get an authority site ranked within 2 weeks.

    One site for heavy comp.
    Multiple sites for lower comp.

Only reason I'd ever make a bunch is if I'm trying to rank a single company for all position in the serps and push away competitors.. For a low comp keyword I'll make a review site, a blog, company site, etc. For high comp keyword I'll put everything I have on the one domain to give it all the content possible.
