Will Amazon PPC Overtake Google?

Today's interesting / disturbing statistic is that 30% of online shoppers go first to Amazon to start their online research for a product (as of Q3, 2011, up from 18% 2 years earlier). Over the same period, Google has dropped from 24% to 13%.

Has anyone used their paid program:

PS. I tend to do the same thing when researching products... 100% of the time! Why? Because of the reviews on Amazon.

Well the PPC ads showing on Amazon *are* AdWords! That's what the "Sponsored Links" section of that page is talking about.

Possibly, I mean Amazon just does everything right. The amount of trust I have with Amazon makes them #1 for my web shopping. I think a lot of people feel the same way.

The ads are served by Amazon's internal ad service, NOT Google Adwords, so I'm not sure what you're looking at.

Hey Frank... great to see you my friend. It's been awhile since the party at Joel's house.

Congrats on the new addition to your family!

Looks like there are a few ways to advertise with Amazon and get on the product page:

I'm working with a new client that caters to the senior market (you've seen their full page ads in Parade) and this has huge potential in addition to Google PPC.

Maybe Amazon should launch a search engine where everything is powered by reviews instead of backlinks?

Interesting but not sure why you say disturbing. I never would have thought that people would go to Amazon first. And you can find almost anything there as well, not just books. If they can get people to think of Amazon as more than just books, they could have a large percentage of their revenues coming from PPC as people looking to buy might use their search. Good for the advertisers too. I guess I'll start recommending Amazon to clients in some cases.

I suspect Ken a lot of people also use Amazon like you for the reviews. Very smart and something else Amazon could use as a selling feature to use them as a shopping search engine.

I did attempt to use their PPC years ago. It was called Click River. Problem was, they only took in US advertisers and was left out of the loop. I did sell my software product there too, although had to get a US address and bank account. Did not work well for me, not enough sales (too niche and just one product) to justify the costs.
