URL change and backlinks

Want to ask the experts about a change in url on an existing site. I noticed a site the other day that a site had about 3000 backling to it in the past. The person orginally had the url as hxxp://mysite.com and proceeded to change it to hxxp://www.mysite.com by adding the www. I then noticed that the site had lost all of the 3000 backinkinks and drop about 8 pages in rankings. I did a comparison on the two urls and the backlinks to the other site wo the www were still there and the new www added site only had about 100 backlinks. It makes some sense since all the orginal baclinks didnt have the www in the money site url but is this possible by just adding the www. even tho the .com name is the same and if so if they changed it back would they get links and ranking back as well as?
