Search box experiment

Thought I would share this. Use it or not.

I have always had a search box at the bottom
of most pages. Give the reader a choice, maybe
get a search click. Rarely used, but did add a
little over a month. Nothing major.

Decided to put one at the top. Thought with
the box more prominent, I would get more searchers
from those that did not immediately find what they
want, nor an ad to click to their liking.

Logical, right?

Search clicks went waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up.
But search revenue was nonexistent. Ad clicks suffered.

So, took down the top search box. Almost instantly
the revenue and clicks went back to "normal."

Seems more people were just using the search box than
either perusing or clicking ads. Lesson learned.

    seems pretty typical.

also as you move the ads lower (via any method) you'll usually lose money

Actually, the ads were at the exact same level. I chopped the header
image in half, and put the search box to the immediate right.

Point taken, if you are referring to more "clutter." The search
box did indeed mix the overall feel and layout of the ads,
and that's not a bad observation.

I had experimented by putting a small text ad to side as the above.
      Clicks suffered then as well.
