Why did keyword ranking go from 26th to 52nd to 23rd to 82nd position in google?

I have been building links to my site since November last year. My site is 1year and 9 months old. My keyword rankings in google have been fluctuating in positions since December 20, 2011. I stopped building links for the past 6 weeks, serps were still fluctuating but not as much as before.

I started building links on Friday the 16th of March 2012 and the keywords that I targeted have decreased in rankings from 26th to 82nd, 69th to 135th and 68th to 105th position in goolge.

I have built enough quality back links to rank some of my keywords on 1st page on goolge but my site has been dancing for 3 months now, would it ever settle down and if so, when?

Your site is dancing, that mostly happens when you build a lot of strong links, Google is now deciding where to put you, don't worry, just give it a week or so.

Actually, it is the opposite. It happens when you build a lot of ****ty links.

I build quality article backlinks mainly at high PR society, and it tends to make rankings dance pretty heavily sometimes, even back to page 9, but it always ends up with getting higher results. Recently I had a keyword at #23, it danced to page5, page 9 etc. now it's at #21 (pretty tough kw btw).

Then we just have a difference of opinion on quality backlinks.

            Yeah I agree with that.

It's hard to offer quality backlinks in a one time fee package, cause most quality backlinks require a monthly payment or a ton of work involved emailing webmasters / offering guest posts / writing guest posts, the prices can't cover that kind of work. So these high PR society posts are about as good as it gets.

It's kinda hard to compete with people who offer high quality backlinks in the form of dofollow blog comments or memberprofiles at PR6 domains

        My thoughts exactly.

Can you give us your URL or service you've been using to build links? Then we can explain the fluctuations better.

Dancing. If the backlinks are good you should settle stronger than you were originally.

Maybe there's a conflict on how you define quality backlinks than Google does. Visit Google Webmaster Guidelines and review their criteria in judging the quality of a link.

Remember, Google dance can sometimes define the quality of your backlinks, the stronger the fluctuation, the weaker your site's backlinks are (mostly).

Yes I admit. Maybe the links that you consider quality backlinks for your website, Google is not doing the same. So try to be very sure about your sources of backlinks!

The most probable reason for the drop could be stale content.
It could be some penalty as well.

Here is Matt Cutts telling the most possible reason for the drop in SERP rankings... Check this out!

All I can add is that with xrumer and scrapebox blasts my site never danced, meaning it dropped like a brick in the ocean.

Try to get some high quality do-follow backlinks using your main keyword.. And, don't worry about your ranking, Google will "update" it very soon, give it a week or two and your ranking will be back.. But, don't stop building backlinks constantly!

I was starting to freak out as well. In Feb, my visitor count was around 200/day, now it's dropped to about 15/ day. Hope it's just the Google dance.

      15 is very, very slow.

And are you an employee of google so you know for sure 15 links
      will up you on google?

And if your site goes back up, does that mean you contribute
to the "penalty" of another site that gets dropped?

Sites below yours now must have suffered a double-secret penalty.

Pity the site at 500. Poor sap suffered a lot.

Real penalty is a deindex. Shuffling and reshuffling of search results
      is just that.

    1. don't change your linking velocity according to the serp movement. Keep it steady.

    2. build second layer on your links to make the "quality links". that will stabilize your site.
