Why you should NOT change all kind of things at the same time, dammit :D

I have a site of mine that dropped 2 spots in the rankings, from #3 to #5 for a pretty competitive keyword, now I try to figure out why but a few things happened:

- I changed a lot about the internal linking structure, played with nofollow tags, now I put it back to how it was (at least I hope I remembered it correctly)

- A few rented homepage links just expired few days ago, though I was already ranking at #3 before I rented them (just had them for 1 month to test).

- I bought a few dubious hidden links 2 days ago, could be dancing or Google instantly recognizes it as bad.

- Haven't build any other links for over a month cause to busy with client sites

- Some blog sites that I use for article distribution might have been deindexed, looking at ALN

- And oh god, my $5/year shared hosting is under a ddos attack again :S why havent I moved it to hostgator yet

Lesson learned: Don't mess with to many things at the same time and especially don't mess with the internal linking when all is well lol.

Things may react in a negative way... depending upon your strategies. If you thing buying bad backlinks will boost your website, you are wrong. Not every experiment is a fail but bad things will definitely get caught by search engines.

The other problem with changing too many factors in SEO is you don't know what exactly caused the change in rankings.

For example, your ranking drop could have occurred because of the internal linking structure or it could be a result of the homepage links. Because you've done both at the same time, you have no idea what the real factor was in changing this.

After restoring the internal linking and moving the site to a different hosting the rankings are back. But again it's unsure if this had to do with it, could just as well be dancing. We'll never know.

Next time I try to do one thing at a time with sites that are established for a long time already.
