Removing unnatural links, requested from my job

Hi everyone,

I would like an opinion on a odd decision I recently had requested done during my day job. I work as a programmer for a large site that gets over 10 million hits a month. Anyways last Monday I received an email from one our long time link partners. Basically he requested that we remove all links to their main page. Now to me this is an odd request to me as they will losing a huge back link to their site.

Their reasoning is they are removing all back links they deem as "unnatural links". I was really confused at first but did as I was told. 2 days later I read about the new Google algorithm update and I began to see what they were thinking. My experience has always been the more links the better but now it seems that even the big companies are shying away from back links now. I know for sure these guys know their stuff as well as they are one of the biggest retailers in the United States.

So will this new Google update finally be a big change towards to totally original content? or will it still be operations as usual? Either I am really excited as I think it will finally level the playing field for guys like me without deep pockets to buy links. I can only hope I guess.

Actually, it is heading towards the exact opposite. SEO is getting more expensive, not cheaper and not easier.

      Yep.

If you think about it, cheap links are unnatural looking, but organic links take a lot of resources to acquire.

This means the deeply lined pockets are going to be playing the game a lot better than the little guy more than has ever been so.

I guess that is another way to look at it, my thoughts are that quality content sites will become more competitive. I think this will at least weed out the people that think that they can buy themselves up to top of search results.
