Are you ready for the next Google Update

Matt Cutts said this is Google's attempt to "level the playing field" between webmasters that build quality content versus webmasters who are just really aggressive SEOs.

He said, and I quote:

What about the people optimizing really hard and doing a lot of SEO. We don't normally pre-announce changes but there is something we are working in the last few months and hope to release it in the next months or few weeks. We are trying to level the playing field a bit. All those people doing, for lack of a better word, over optimization or overly SEO - versus those making great content and great site. We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect. We have several engineers on my team working on this right now.

Matt Cutts: Google Update To Target Overly SEO'ed Web Sites In Upcoming Weeks

Think of it this way - Would you like to read content optimized for google bots or would you like to read some high quality content which helps you? This was bound to happen sooner or later. Eventually, SEO would not even matter as websites will be ranked based on the quality of content and nothing more.

I won't be surprised if google came up with some sort of a procedure where users will be the judge of which site stays in top 10 and which doesn't.

Content optimized for google bots will soon be understood as "content optimized for humans"

I think it's Google that defines what SEO is in the first place, so for them to punish people for capitalizing on it is incredibly stupid.

They made the rules and SEO's came in and built their sites around those rules to achieve rankings.

When the rules get changed again, people will just adjust all their plugins and standards of linking so they are aggressively natural looking. And Sissyphus will roll his rock right back up the hill all over again.

At some point they will figure out how to distinguish between a real content site and one that has been thrown up to look like one. People who have sites optimized to take advantage of the current algorithm will get sent back to square one. Then they'll start figuring out how to game the system even better...

I don't really mind about it as my site isn't that big or influential. Even if it does affected me, it doesn't matter as I still earning $0.

The question is what algorithms will the Googlebot use to judge what is good content and what is just overly Search Engine Optimized? An interesting question indeed, can't wait to see how this plays out !

Yes" but he never mentioned a word how Google will respond if competition trying to hurt your site with the spammy links, which now is possible to get your competitor penalized sending unnatural links...

If it happens to be reality my site will get some more advantage of the content. But I am sure google has no algorithm to determine which content is good, given that if the same topic is described differently by the two different authors.

Googles algorithm forces us to produce some type of quality. Sure you can find examples of crap but overall they don't mind that we succeed because the algorithm polices the quality. I know I've stepped up my quality because of Google and in that sense, the algorithm works without having to work. If that makes sense.

What I'm wondering about is all the adsense flipper fans and how they will be affected. I have to guess that those who purchased their sites will have a difficult time on returns. I've seen people spend 20xs the monthly on 1 keyword lol.

I think a lot of people are freaking out about nothing. (Not in this thread in particular, but in others I've read.)

There's a big difference between GOOD CONTENT that is properly SEO'd and junk content that is "overly SEO'd."

      This. One thousand times this.

This update will likely only affect those who have crap content that follows all the quick tips for on-page SEO, and tons of backlinks (which doesn't make sense of the site is just crap). So I'm not concerned about this at all.

Good - this will just help to eliminate 1000's of short term, reckless IM's who knock up rubbish sites for the sole purpose of ranking; I'm in favor of that.

Google getting tougher on SEO may actually help us.

I'm in favor of it as well but we have to keep in mind that google never pinpoints any change they are all broad and sweeping so I would suspect a lot of quality sites will get hammered as well as collateral damage.

It seems like they are setting a standard which means "make content for Google or search engnines" while stated in their webmaster guidelines that we should make pages for real people. What if their Google bots crawled a content which really helps users but totally junk in the eyes of their bots? (though I'm not saying that their bots are dull). However, we cannot judge it until we experience or see it.

I am not totally against it. I'm just waiting. This is SEO: the world where weird, rapid and unexpected updates happen. let's just get used to it if this update rolls because practically, we have no choice but to abide if we really want to make decent income.

This. Every time the Big G rolls out an update, my sites go up in the SERPs. Why? Because I use the good, long-term thinking advice on this forum and keep away from the bad, short-term thinking advice.

Lots of good sites lost their rankings recently, so be careful what you wish for.

Negative SEO is VERY possible right now (and cheap) - be careful who you're up against in the SERPs. You can do everything 100% "white hat" and have the best content in your niche (along with a couple years of age and a high PR) - a competitor can still kill your rankings. And it won't even cost them much.

Quality sites do get hit. Good content doesn't always rank. Google needs to sort their **** out or else it's not going to be pretty.

Sure, my rankings go up and down. However, mine have continued to trend up through each of the Panda updates.

Like most in this thread I think this will work out to be a good thing for those publishers working hard to write content that a real user will find useful.

The only thing is sometimes it's a bumpy ride for a week or two while Google makes the change...
