Meta Tag SEO... Not Dead!

Hi new here. This place seriously looks awesome! I have been using computers at an advanced level for many years and have a pretty techie background so I have a huge advantage on beginners, but I still have never gotten true affiliate marketing nailed. I have always had good luck doing basic SEO for small business websites though.

I've been hearing for the past few years that meta tags are being phased out, and may not be useful at all in the near future. Maybe I am getting something wrong but the description tag seems to be strong in many of my pages listed on Google, and the title seems to be essential to good rankings. I guess the title is not really a meta tag. What is the current WF opinion of meta tags and filling them in. How long should they be?

What are some tips for the title tag? Length? Why is the pipe ( | ) so common now?

    Meta tags refers to several different tags. It's the meta keywords that are no longer used by most of the search engines. The meta title and meta description definitely are still used, though not always. (There are other meta tags that don't get used very often or are generally set behind the scenes by plugins and the like.)

    Depends on which meta tags you refer to. The major search engines don't look at keyword meta tags anymore. However, the title and description tags are extremely important. Many people also fill out meta tags since it takes just a few extra seconds and can be helpful for internal searches as well as for some smaller, specialized search engines.

    Oh and regarding you questions, title tag, rule of thumb is 70 characters, including spaces and description tag, rule of thumb is 160 characters including spaces. I personally haven't seen pipes used anywhere except when doing spintax.

    This thread is probably seo board bond but with the newest update it seems meta tags are not going to be very important at all.
