Yahoo Directory - Worth The Whopping $299?

Is it worth it?

I assume as Yahoo is one of the oldest and most respected players online that it does carry some weight. But $300 per year is steep.

How strong are the effects on offpage SEO if included in the directory?
#$299 #directory #whopping #worth #yahoo

    Steep- Yes.

    Worth it - Yes.

But its not something you want to rush into, as you said $300 is steep, VERY steep - for a backlink. However Yahoo is an authority, the link carries a huge amount of weight.

But then you have to think of alternatives, perhaps you can build an equivalent quality of backlinks yourself? It all depends on the site, your competetion, keywords and the ease of building links yourself.

Dont forget there is a HUGE list of free directories all over the internet, here is a site i found with a quick google search, might be worth checking out: Free Web Directory , freewebsitedirectories - SEO Friendly Directory

    Hope this all helps,
    thanks,
    -Michael

In my opinion the price is much too high and definitely not worth it. You can get authority links easily either for free or a small price. You are better off spending the $299 in other ways that will help your site.

If you want to get that backlink for free Get your website in dmoz, Yahoo will index you in their directory as well.

Now, the question would be how to crack Dmoz, I been trying to answer this question for over a year

Buy a website thats for sale that is already listed in DMOZ, then use the 'change of address' feature within GWT to set it the domain you want to use

OMG a real, actionable tip! Now watch no one do anything about it, lulz.

But yeah, it's not really worth the yearly fee, unless you're a known brand. You can get 5-8 really good directory listings for this money (one off payment as well, mostly)...

It's a good directory to be in, but not absolutely necessary in the beginning. I used to work for several national associations and their "membership directories" used to be the only and have-to-be place to list your business if you wanted to target individuals/companies in that niche.

With the emergence of the Internet, the opportunities to be found by your target market have increased, but the underlying philosophy of why you still want to have a listing in the Yahoo Directory if you're a successful/established business has not changed in my opinion.

Wherever your primary competition can be found and has a listing, you want to have a listing too. This is the dominant reason why companies advertise on Websites, trade magazines, go to trade shows, etc., even if the "Return-on-Investment" isn't that great for that specific opportunity.

They chalk it off as a "branding" expense because there's nothing worse than when a potential or EXISTING customer (that goes to that event, visits that Website directory or reads that magazine article and sees all of your competition listed/mentioned there) asks you why you're not there too.

But this is for people/concerned about building a brand for themselves, their Websites or their business. If you're just playing the search engine game and building keyword-optimized sites to generate traffic for your affiliate offers, then this may not be a primary concern for you.

But when "social signals" and "Klout" scores have more and more impact on search engine results within the next couple of years, those people that DON'T have a branding strategy will be affected greatly in my opinion.

      Thanks. Very valuable insight.

I interpret it as this => Be at the right marketplace to promote your business.

The main online/offline marketing issue right now is HOW TO GET BUYERS TRAFFIC?

If by paying $300 means you're getting HIGHLY TARGETED exposure, then that is the way to go.

That could mean HIGHER CONVERSIONS and VIRAL REFERRAL. You may achieve your targeted yields in a shorter period of time.

But first, use your online tools to check VISITORS' AFFINITY and DEMOGRAPHICS of the spot they're going to place your link at.

These data will help you make a smarter decision whether to go for it or forget it.

Tough question. The $299 fee isn't even a guarantee that you will get included. You should try DMOZ first to see if they accept you. A Yahoo Directory backlink is good, but as far as direct traffic goes... i doubt if you will see alot of it.

In America anyone can go straight to the top. And here's what's exciting- It is the bottom that is crowded, not the top.

I had read on the Internet a few years back that if you didnt pay the $299 recurring fee that they didnt take your link out of the directory anyways. Anybody know whether this is true?

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I've tested it a few times.

It may have something to do with how good/useful/relevant your site is to the category of the directory.

For the original question, yes Yahoo Directory is worth it. It's one of the only paid links and that won't get you penalized.

Paying $299 for inclusion is a directory is pretty dumb.

Like some have said. You pay, they don't have to
      include you.

Second, you have to pay $299 EVERY year!!!!

Now, ask yourself this. When's the last time you
used the yahoo directory? Since you fell off
your dinosaur? Exactly. I got one of my websites
in there when it was free, 1997. Still there, last
check, but I get zero traffic from it.

A backlink? Who knows how a backlink is counted
in the yahoo directory. Google supposedly does
not like paying to raise PR, right? And they know
you have paid for the link....

People here will give you way more bang for your buck
      for $299.
