Dear Warriors,

I am considering to purchase a website PR4 from a buddy.

Im quite worries that the site might lose rank upon transfer to another host, changing the DNS.

Your feedback in this matter will be very much appreciated.

Regards

That is something that could happen for sure. You should go with private registration and try to retain some of the original content, or most likely you won't get much permanent benefit from the purchase (but maybe short term benefit).

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

      Thanks dvduval

Im considering to ask him to transfer the rest of the sites & take over the plan with the site.I think it much safer this way?

It can happen, but that doesnt mean it will. I have bought a lot of sites that were ranking and they continued to rank long after the transfer. In fact, I have never had a ranking drop just from buying a domain.

The best thing you can do in this situation is to make sure that the transfer is done as quickly as possible, with the least amount of downtime. Also make sure that all of the pages for the site are transferred as well. Losing rank is a possibility but that possibility goes up when it takes a long time, or any content is lost in the proces.

      Quite worried to risk it.

I assume leaving it in the same plan is much safer aint it?

IT will loose rank if there were serious modifications to the prior PR update cache of it.

I had many sites which got PR5 and they were not a month old, but lost it of course 4 months later.

So dont worry about it too much. Keep adding relevant content and make sure the backlinks pointing to it are still in tact.

    Sincerely, Buyseech

I don't know where in the world some people are getting their information from but changing DNS does not cause a drop in PR. the only thing that causes a drop in PR is the loss of links. So if your buddy is your buddy and he knows his links and you can maintain the content the links were looking to there is no reason the site should lose PR or rank. Set up your hosting, populate content and switch DNS and there should be no issues.

          Additional...

If the keywords are local and OP switch from a local server to foreign server he might lose some ranks. e.g. If the keyword is "New York Hotels" and the site is hosted in a New York based server. OP rehost the site in a Canadian server then it can lose some ranks.

Actually was thinking the same thing, but OP really means rankings from what I can tell.

Even though I usually try not to change host, I know some friends of mine did loose their ranks for a couple of days, probably due to a website crawl when the website was down. Anyway ranking usually get back to normal after a couple of days (if it even dropped first) so you shouldn't have any problem!

Just changing the IP address that the DNS points to should not hurt your ranking. I've done it on both big and small sites with no problem. However, changing the structure of the site, making a lot of pages disappear without 301 redirects, things like that can kill you. If all of a sudden the pages people are linking to no longer exist, then those links will be discounted, which can hurt your ranking.
