Keyword Research Showing Different Results?

I'm a bit confused. I've been researching a keyword that I want to use. It is: "long beach new york"

I inserted the term in google on Day 1 and it had around 58K relevant pages. On Day 2 I searched for the same exact term and it had 788K results.

How is this possible? I even entered it again Day 3 and it was back around 58K.

Screencasts show Day 1 and Day 2.

Mmm that number doesn't matter anyways!

You might want to use a better tool to do keyword research.

Isn't it harder to rank against 788K pages rather than 58K pages?

Of all of those sites, how many do you think are actively SEOing for the keyword and how many show up as results just because they mention the location? It might be better to look at the domain age, backlinks and onsite for the top 10 on the keyword. Top 20 if its ultra competitive or receives a ton of searches.

Thanks everyone, you all have some good points. I guess just worrying about the first page is crucial. Just checked it again and it's back down to 58K.

The keyword is in quotes so those 58K pages have that exact keyword in their site. I just thought it would be easier to rank against 58K rather then 780K. I was told by a SEO friend that when targeting exact keywords in "" you should only go after keywords that have 300K or less results.

That's a common bit of SEO advice but it really isn't founded, it's unfortunately another piece of disinformation spread usually by SEOs who haven't actually tested out the theories they repeat. Honestly, don't even pay attention to those numbers. It's the equivalent of their being 780k people named Dave and how that could possibly make it hard for you to become popular because your name is also Dave. It's not really related at all, there are way more important factors you need to be paying attention to.
