Just curious if anyone is versed in both SEO and PPC here. I have been studying SEO for some time, but am required to know PPC at my new job. Does learning PPC make me a traitor to the school of SEO?? Haha, kidding, but just wondering how many of you know or practice both of these.

Yeah, lots of people start out versed in PPC and end up learning SEO because they are sick of paying high $ for PPC!

PPC is simple, really, but there are some helpful techniques, like obtaining a nice quality score and such.. do a search for PPC or pay per click.

A great classic resource for PPC is perrymarshall.com. He has a couple of very similar books, one an ebook, and the other a paperback. They're call The Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords and The Definitive Guide to Google Adwords. Great stuff.

It really isn't rocket science, and works hand in hand with SEO. In fact, many people claim getting some PPC ads boosts your SEO ranking as well, but I can't confirm that.

The biggest thing to remember with PPC is to always be doing testing. Google makes it trivial to have two or more ads competing against each other so you can see what is working best with YOUR audience and keywords. If you tie it in with Google Analytics, you can see the results all the way through to sales/conversions. Always having ads competing against each other and replacing the weaker ad regularly is a huge way to get better results over time.

This is called arbitrage. You can buy traffic at 1 cent a click and try to profit. Anything higher will probably fail.

Not true. I pay $6 to $20 per click and make a decent profit. You need a good conversion rate, like 25 - 40%.

I would love to know how you get a conversion rate that high.

By testing, testing and testing again. You have to test ads, landing page, keywords etc. I use A/B testing and multivariate depending on the situation.

Ok, you may have to throw abit of money at it (PPC) but you should look to the long term ROI. Once you have gone through a few campaign start-ups and know how it works, the risks appear less and less as time goes on.

All the info you need to run a succesful campaign is available free on the web. You just have to keep looking.

SEO is all about organic rankings whereas PPC is about sponsored listings.
In PPC you bid for keywords and your listing is keyword triggered. Sponsored listings and organic listings are two different concepts. PPC ranking does not affect your organic rankings and vice-a-versa.

      Hi ddshosting,

There is nothing free about SEO if you are doing it right. Either method is going to cost you plenty of time and money.

While it is often true that you can get a better ROI with SEO in the long run, it is often easier to achieve a positive ROI with PPC in the short run. And you typically waste a lot more time and money testing with SEO than with PPC. The testing results with PPC are fast and accurate, while testing in SEO is longer and require greater investment than with PPC.

The only advantage to doing SEO without PPC is that you can invest your free time into SEO, assuming you have nothing better to do with your time, while it takes some capital investment in PPC. If you are broke, it gives you a path to get started. It wouldn't be my first choice, unless I was flat broke and could afford no other options.

As far as "just frittering money away", you can do that just as easily with SEO as PPC. I recommend you not "fritter away" your time or money on either. Invest the time and money to do it right and utilize both, otherwise you are just giving your competitors an advantage over you.

if you focus on cost per click in ppc no wonder you cant make it work. most marketers have no clue how to market, dive onto a ppc platform, blow their budget and then say ppc doesnt work

roi is what you're after, would you pay $20 a click if you got $100 back?

      Hi Ewan,

      So true.

I'd buy every $100 dollar bill I could get my hands on for $20 a piece (and laugh all the way to the bank).

A profit is a profit, it doesn't matter how much it costs if it is instant profit. Why would anyone want to give an instant profit up to their competitors?

PPC learning should come up with practice and it will be costs for us because ppc experience doesn't come for free. We have to keep some budget on PPC networks like Google adwords and we can practice over there by create some Ad campaigns. Actually i have done this to learn some basics on PPC.

While coming to the SEO, it's like a open source. We can learn, teach freely without spending a single penny. There are many resources available to learn SEO. I do mainly prefer to read official google webmaster blog, seomoz and the forums like this one.

There is nothing wrong with PPC has long you can make a nice profit. I'm trying to become more diverse with PPC as well. I have taken many classes on it.. PPC Classroom was the best course I ever took on the subject.

I don't they are available any more... PPC is very viable now.. Especially with the lack of competition with every mom and pop running ads..

You can still get 10 cent a click in the right niche...

Beating Adwords - Are You Getting Slapped By Google? is a good course too

funny question!Pay per click(PPC) is just frittering money away when SEO is free.PPC can be updated immediately. With PPC, a marketer can quickly change a campaign's keywords and where they point, often within minutes, but SEO very hard!
