bogged down with too many tools - time to cut down

a lot of free seo tools out there, plug-ins and resources
anyway it's no good having a load of things that all do the same thing
i have disabled a lot of firefox plug-ins and am going with seo quake now
why does it display semrush links? what influence does sem rush have?
how important is google index number?
what stats should i be paying particularly close attention to?
for example if i SEOquake a competitor, what should i keep my eyes on? page rank and internal and external links? are those the most important criteria? and the lower the better obviously for my competitors if i want to overcome them
any help/advice appreciated
