Is SEO overrated?

I'm wondering if anyone else here thinks SEO is a little overrated. It seems like Google keeps trying to remove the advantages of aggressive SEO (by that I mean any SEO beyond the very basic stuff).

I also feel like SEO doesn't really add value to what you give your site users. I suppose if your site already offers good value, you get more readers, but SEO doesn't affect your contents quality.

Actually SEO can have a positive effect on content quality.

Notice how wikipedia uses jumplinks at the top of most pages.

    Example, Electric car

Those jumplinks break the page up into logical groups of related text for both the human reader & the SERPs. Very easy to navigate the page for human traffic.

As far as SEO, those same jumplinks are how you get jumplinks in your SERP description. Jumplinks in the SERP description help boost the SERP CTR.

You have to look past the basic SEO that everyone else is running into the ground. Look at sites like Wikipedia that constantly rank pages in the SERPs.

It's funny, each time I tell people on this forum something to help rank their pages & it involves Wikipedia, a few always claim Google plays favorites with sites like Wikipedia (BS).

Anyone can do the same quality on-page SEO as sites like Wikipedia, very few will ever actually do it.

    • Good stuff, never heard of jumplinks before!

      Now for my opinion.

      Is SEO overrated? No.

SEO is the best place for new internet marketers to test the waters.

Once they can get traffic and learn to convert it then they can move on to PPC and invest more money safely knowing their page converts.

Then there are the experts who still utilize SEO extremely well, they're making a great living off of it.

Amazon + SEO still works AMAZINGLY well in my opinion
    • When we have to scroll through 100's of lines of jumplinks at the top of every MMO blog, MFA or Amazon review site we'll know who to blame

      (nice tip!)

  • SEO just keeps getting more and more important as search volume and ad dollars keep increasing. You just have to adapt to the changes.
  • Yah, I've noticed a great boost in CTR from authorship and/or jumplinks in SERPs. Though I do need to get jumplinks on more of my sites... it's something I tend to forget about.
  • Ask Google any competitive keyword and see who is in the top-10...
SEO is not overrated, but you should use it wisely! I don't understand those people who buy 5000-10000 backlinks and at the same time have awful and ununique content on their websites. And after all this actions they wonder why Google banned them or SEO campaign is not profitable.
