For example i am doing a website on a disease and many of the top 10 results are articles from a medical website about this disease. My question is that is it hard to beat these sites even though they have like a 4 and 5 pr but only have one page about the disease? Thanks!

As with any page you're trying to outrank, you'll need to take a look at their backlinks, how optimized the pages are for the keywords you're targeting, etc.

Can't say for sure until you analyze them. There is a lot more to look at beyond PR. A page with PR can be outranked by a page without PR if the content on the page without PR is optimized.

keyword and quality backlink is the first thing you should remember all times in SEO.

You say "only have one page about the disease" - remember that you are trying to rank a page. Does your page "beat" their page in content, authority links coming into it, domain age, PR. Probably not.

The thing about diseases, medicine, health is can you get the right peer reviews? These are not subjects to be trifled with by affiliate marketers with no knowledge of the subject. If you do get to a position at number 1 for such a term, I'd be surprised if you lasted. I'd also be horrified. This is exactly what google is trying to prevent.

If you have the best info, newest research etc. and some nice links coming in from high up places praising your work and sanctioning it, then, of course, I'd welcome it with open arms - as a searcher.

Keeping getting quality backlinks to the page you're trying to rank. Be sure to use your keywords as the anchor text in the backlink.

See, PR is not the only thing you need to be on the top... Article from medical websites are considered as authority source of providing information, this is why Google prefers them over other results.
In order to beat them, you have to beat the authority of those medical websites.

tough situation UW. In order to beat the page you're gonna have to beat the site it's a part of. If they have proper hierarchies which are linked together properly and also have quality contextual content en mass, you'll be hard pressed to get anywhere near them.

Authority sites are only trumped by a higher authority. Ironically, these sites don't worry about SEO or beating their competitors. They devote their energies into building a library of content for the purpose of reference.

    Good luck with your project.

Since the recent panda update, all article directories lost their veto.

I also don't think article directories are any stronger than the sites on the first page of the search engines, if the others don't bother you then article directories too shouldn't.

It is easier to beat a ranked page like this with a niche specific site but depending on the authority / optimisation of the ranked page it may take a while. Having a highly relevant / specific site always gives you the upper hand... but it all depends on how you promote and build links to your site.

If your backlinks are increased and cross the limit then your site cross the article.
