Does google give any weight to comments on a page for its rankings?
Obviously a well written and popular article is going to get more reader comments than a poorly written one that nobody but a search engine ever sees.

So my question is, does google use this then as a factor in determining quality and rankings at all? And are comments on a page counted as far as kw's used in the comments etc?
If I write a post that gets say 50 comments with 47 being positive, 10 mentioning my kw phrase, and only a few or no negative ones, is that a positive factor at all?

Do we even know for that matter or is it a google secret?

  • I often see sites that are in #1 position with many comments. There are three possible scenarios:

    1) They get more visitors and that means more comments
    2) They have more comments and climb faster in serps
    3) a combination of 1 + 2

    I personally think it's a combination of 1 + 2.

      Google has labeled comment pages spam.
      They even have made it against TOS to put
      adsense on comment pages.

      All comments are spam. No matter what you think
      you add to a page, you don't. Why on earth would
      google take spam, and raise a page?

      Why would you allow knuckleheads to alter
      your page and it's contents? One reason why
      they do not allow adsense.

      Now I know. All of you just love to spam blogs
      and think you are the $#!ts. You aren't.

      Big famous authoritative blogs with special
      google relationships are something else. Like
      newspaper, entertainment sites, etc.

      Your blog and the blogs you spam are not.

      Why people continue down this path of allowing
      spam and posting spam will just lead them down
      the road to ruin.

      I cannot believe you people think comments add
      anything of value. They don't. They actually
      devalue your page. Since google says blog comments
      are spam, what does that say about the links you
      leave in the comments?

    • The guy who cuts my hair ALWAYS has a $5 bill sticking out of a container near his equipment. I'll bet it works well, too. I can see through it. But I'm guessing plenty of people don't. More power to him, I say.
  • But those blog posting which have good and reletive quality comments have good weightage and search engine like that. If comments are making the topic more interesting and increase the knowledge of viewer then this is the plus point. Similarly if we have and people comments on those blog posting then it is good to atleast go through those comments and check them.

    If they are improving information then approve them else discard.

    A comment on a page is text, being a comment doesn't have anything to do with SEO.

    Look at a Google Cache (text version) of a page with comments, it's text, well, unless the comment section is an iframe or javascript, which is better IMO If you really need comments on the page.
