A few questions about link wheels

I've been reading up on link wheels, and, I'm not really sure if they're

a) worth it
b) bad for my main site?

I mean, what's really wrong with creating a bunch of web 2.0 sites, with original content, that links to your main site, and other web 2.0 properties?

Is there good link wheels and bad link wheels?

When I first heard the term link wheel, I thought it was some black hat technique, as I knew Google didn't like them... but... when I found out that the most common link wheel, is just web 2.0 properties, linking to each other and back to your own site... I thought... why does Google not like this? I mean, what exactly is the problem with creating a hubpage, putting original content on it, linking it back to your site, and say, a weebly site...

So... should we only link these to our 2nd tier sites?

  • All popular web 2.0 sites like Hubpages and Squidoo have a high PR ranking and the entire point of having a link wheel is to have those high PR ranking web 2.0 sites back linking to your site.
    Is it worth it?
    it depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you want organic traffic from link wheeling then it is definitely not a good idea. It takes too much of an effort to write the content for different sites on a regular basis and to promote it.
    Bad for your main site?
    As far as your concerns about Google is concerned, in the perspective of a search engine you are not supposed to be back linking to your own site but then again that doesn't seem to be stopping webmasters! As long as you are using original content or are at least linking to the original content, I cant imagine link wheels having adverse effects.

    I personally do not practice it because it takes time and effort and does not guarantee anything.

  • In my opinion, its another kind of link wheeling. Link wheel has many ways and its one of the ways can be done but i don't suggest to link to the main site from all web 2 sites. Link to it from some of them. It looks more natural.
  • You also don't necessarily have to close the linkwheel, it's not that obvious that way, and not interlinking at all isn't a bad idea either.
  • This has been discussed in many places. Google's on to the closed link wheel scheme. Now, to maximize your benefit and to minimize your footprint, you should create a web that does not link all your web 2.0 properties together and which only links back to your money site maybe 50% of the time.

    • Cheers guys, I'll ammend the link wheel, hopefully it's not too late, as I pinged the lot or it.

      If I'm taking the links off 50% that link back to my main site, is it a good idea to link to other properties I own, such as youtube, viemo, metacafe etc...
  • Mix your link wheel up. Don't have all of them linking to each other in a circle holding hands.

    Have some that link only to your money site and have some that link to other web 2.0's that you created and point to your money site. Just don't follow a certain pattern all the time, diversify.

    Google doesn't like the owners to create backlinks to our own sites?

    Then what are press releases and other similar forms of promoting considered? Google ain't got no problems with those forms of backlinking.
