I think so... you can really go wrong with guest blogging, especially if it's on a popular website. If you place a link to your site in the article, anyone who likes your article might go to your site to see if they can find similar content they like. You will be receiving traffic from the popular website, not directly from a search engine.

Also a newbie, whats the best way to get a guest blog gig. Will simply finding a related blog, and contacting them saying "hey I have a unique quality article, and I am looking to guest post on your blog" work?

guest blogging is a great way of gaining backlinks, brand awareness and referral traffic. it does however require very good content which can be expensive if you are not creating it yourself.

I started doing guest post 3 months ago and so far it increased the quality backlinks of my handled website. You just simply need to search relevant blogs.

Who in their right mind is going to allow guest blogging
on their blog? That is, if your blog means something
to you.

If you are so hard up for posts that you have to have
some knucklehead guest blog, then don't post. Period.

I can't imagine anyone allowing guest blogging.

I have allowed some writers to PAY me money
to write an article and have a resource box.
Happens rarely, I might add.

Quest blogging is a good way to get backlinks and traffic, but these blogs must be popular high traffic blogs otherwise it is just low key article marketing that you are doing.

To get your quest post published by quality blogs like ProBlogger for example you need to really put some work and research into the post and you might want to use some images and screenshots as well.
Only go for the top blogs in your niche, otherwise what is the point giving away high quality content for nothing. Some top blogs have quest post guidelines you can follow but if not you might want to contact them first and run your idea by them to see what they think, as all the top blogs get so many quest post offers so they only choose the best ones and publish them.

I've been using guest blogging for several months now...it's a great way to get backlinks from content which are considered white hat if there is such a thing like this today.

But let's say for the sake of things you're against it. How do you propose to build links these days? I really would like to know since I know you're a veteran.

Many of the most popular blogs on the web are pretty much nothing but guest posts. It isn't like you lose rank from one outbound link, especially when it is to a relevant site. Getting unique perspectives from outside sources is what makes blogs successful.

I can see being very selective about the quality of the posts you allow on your blog but seriously look around the web, there are tons of blogs that rely solely on guest posts to keep going.

I write occasionally for a couple blogs in the web design niche. Not only do they give links back but they also pay pretty decently for my posts.

Allowing guest posts on your blog can be extremely useful to your audience. We recently did a guest post "debate" post about Authority Vs. Niche Sites:
Debate: Niche Sites Vs. Authority Sites | AdSense Flippers

We contacted two other known bloggers and asked them to help us out. They both had different perspectives on the discussion and we thought they would provide a ton of value. Ultimately, this post has been viewed by a ton of people, there are some great discussions in the comments, etc. So...allowing guest blogging? Absolutely!

Another guy that's done a TON of guest blogging and it's paid off is Tom from LeavingWorkBehind:

He's done some guests posts on some high-traffic blogs and the few that I've read were quite useful/helpful.

Guest blogging should be the core of any link building strategy, aside from on-site content creation that's crafted to generate organic links. I've gotten a handful of PR 6 links in a single month from guest blogs. You just have to know where to look. If you're an expert in your field, people will want you to guest blog for them. If you have nothing to offer, then yeah, it's going to be hard to find people who want your content.

I'd also suggest to stay away from blog commenting.

Yes Because Guest blogging definitely has a lot of advantages which I’ll be going into soon but one major concern I have been getting from people is that they only see guest blogging being used in the make money online niche and ask if it is really effective in other niches. Since guest blogging is based on you giving away free content with hopes of getting link/traffic/exposure, it is really practical and effective in other niches.

How feasible is this? I find it hard enough just of find blogs to comment on that are dofollow. It seems many times harder to find blogs that will allow you to write an article and put your link in it when they don't even know you.

All you have to do is just send them an email saying who you are, what you want to write about, and how it will benefit their readers. Keep it super brief. Make sure the post idea you pitch is something they don't already have on their blog and is a really catchy title.

As long as you have a decent command of the English language and write a good post, there should be no reason they turn you down.

Guest blogging should be part of your total seo strategy, there is several ways to find relavant blogs, and there are tons of people looking for quality content.

Google has stated that page1 results would also start being affected by other traffic sources, sho don't only rely on the big G for traffic.

I have relooked at a product I bought more than a year back to start driving alternative traffic to my site so that these updates don't affect me so much.

Guest blogging is a great way to get quality back links as well as quality traffic….if you can write in your niche blog you will get powerful back links and true visitors….and don’t forget if your post is really useful people will link to your post and that will add another bonus to your money site…

So personally I think niche guest blogs to high PR blogs are great….

Try Comment Kahuna free software. It is a tool to "Troll" for keywords you want to rank for on blogs. Next you can use this tool to quickly fill in the comment required fields and leave a comment which will bring you wonderful "Google Juice". The tool will indicate which blogs have no follow turned off. You want those blogs because they provide more juice than the ones with no-follow turned on.

Just try to leave relevant comment posts.
