Did I find a Golden Keyword?!?!?!!

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to IM but have been learning tons lately and I'm thinking about making a "Google Sniper 2" (I've gone through most threads about it) type site with this keyword that seems to be a real nugget!

It's a 5 word broad phrase about one of the most marketed departments on the net. It has 8,000 monthly searches and has 87,200 "competitors" putting the phrase between "-----" aphostrophes.

The top competitors are: a yahoo answers page at the very top, (with a few links as the best answer) then there's a blog that doesn't have the key word anywhere in the url but is indeed a IM site that appears to be done by a robot or something with tons of posts and links, weekly updates it seems. Then a couple more IM blog like pages and maybe authority sites that somehow include the keyword as: domain name dot com / keyword-like phrase. and a youtube vid somewhere in between.

To me it's very odd that it doesn't appear as a keyword domain website at the very top but I don't know if it's just because no one has created one on my native language or if its this panda update I see mentioned around or what? The concensus seems to be that GS2 is way outdated so...

Should I go for it and will I win the top if there's no one with that exact keyword or should I keep on researching affiliate IM? Thanks anyone!

  • Unfortunately, one of the downsides of relying on an outdated course for doing your keyword research is… You get outdated results. Nobody has seriously used the search-in-quotes method of competition analysis since 2009, and even then it was invalid.

#1. Competition wise, you only really care about the top 10 results for the keyword without quotes… After all, these are the people that you need to beat in order to start getting traffic.

#2. Keyword volume wise, is the phrase 8,000 broad searches per month, phrase searches per month, or exact searches per month… Because that makes a difference. 8,000 exact searches per month is great, broad is still good but probably not what most would consider "golden".

All of that being said, I'm still going to tell you to go for it and make the site anyways. Especially if the EMD is available. Don't spend more time learning about Internet marketing then you have to… Actually getting out there and taking action is the most important step IMHO. Most newbies fail before they begin because they spend so long in preparation that they're burnt out by the time they install Wordpress!

Even if you don't make money from this first website, that's okay! You probably will, but either way the experience is worth more than the money at this point. Set a deadline for having this first website built, and then get to it!

I would recommend that you do 10-20 articles instead of just 5, though.

    • That makes total sense!

Yeah, like I've said it's a yahoo answers at the very top? This looks like a good sign no?

It's phrase (only) 8,000 goblal searches per month.

Thanks man! I think I will! it looks good, my only fear is this Panda thingy, I still don't get what it is but I'm afraid it has something against EMDs? no?

In that case it's not a GS2 site I think. Can I build it GS2 syle and then add up the other 15 articles on top. Or should I have them all in mind from the beggining.

      THANKS again!
  • Don't judge anything off of "broad". Go "exact". If you don't know what I'm talking about, research more!

    • I shouldn't have said broad, lol. I actually only ticked phrase. Good?

  • ...and what would be best? (this is not my idea of course) bestweightlossdiet.com or thebestweightlossdiet.com
  • Either would be fine, but I'd go for the EMD or the shorter one. Whichever applies.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • bestweightlossdiet.com of course
there's gotta be more searches for this. Add the in front only if you need to.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

  • Right so, Just to be clear before I dive in!!!!

...If I type in the 5-word keyword (wich has 8,000 monthly searches ticking phrase only) and yahoo answers appears at the top and there is no EMD (can they still beat me without the EMD?) or any too close then it should be quite good right? Any significant risk with Panda, sandbox, etc?

If you guys give me green light I will go for it tonight!!!! so thanks!

    • How many EXACT searches ... that is what you need to look at. Not phrase, exact.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks

  • Well a couple of other things you might want to consider are:

    1. Does the keyword phrase have commercial intent?

Not to say you can't make money with informational keyword phrases it's just more of a process I think to get people who are searching for information as opposed to people who are looking to buy or very close to buying; unless you're doing Adsense or lead generation which if that's the case all you have to do to make money is for them to click or take some sort of action that doesn't involve the person spending money.

    2. Look at local searches not global. I say local because those are searches done in the U.S. and global means just that...global.

It's doubtful that you'll rank for google.com, google.uk, google.de (Germany), etc. to get all that global traffic so just look at the local searches.

    • I think it does! its something like best (place) for (verb to use the product) (product category (which is one of the very top product categories that get sold online I'd say)).com. It doesn't have the word buy but it doesnt have the word free in it either...

I'm not in the US, anything to consider? They appear as the same anyway, global and local...

  • And phrase match could work if you don't mind doing a bit more research for more keyword phrases, writing more content and going after long tail keyword phrases as well as the searches that get more traffic.

    For example:

"home alarm system" gets 9,900 phrase searches meaning that there is approximately 9,900 searches with "home alarm system" in the searches and in that order.

And here's the break down of EXACT local searches:

    home alarm system = 2,400
home alarm system reviews = 480
wireless home alarm system = 390
best home alarm system = 390
    etc., etc., etc.

And those keyword phrases would add up to something around 9,900 searches but that's if the Google keyword tool lists them all...some keyword phrases get such little traffic that Google doesn't list them all.

However, the ones that aren't listed you can find by typing in "home alarm system" in the Google search bar and looking at the suggestions that appear...tedious work but a good way to find long tail keyword phrases (may even be some tools to make this less tedious and time consuming). But keep in mind some may get a decent amount of searches and some may not.

And what I mean when I say some may get a decent amount of searches even though it's not listed in the Google keyword tool YET because it may be a keyword phrase that's trending now...kind of like when a new product comes out and it starts getting a ton of searches later on as it becomes more popular even though it wasn't getting searches before...but in the meantime it won't be listed by the Google keyword tool.

Sorry for the long post and others can correct me if I'm wrong about something...
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Just out of curiousity...what's the CPC on the EXACT phrase? For 880...I would hope it is >$1 or $2. If it is less..the earnings go down.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
    • A lot more than that! ...less than $20 or $30 though.
  • Right so, Just to be clear before I dive in!!!!

...If I type in the 5-word keyword (which has 880 monthly EXACT searches) and yahoo answers appears at the top and there is no EMD or any too close then it should be quite good right? Any significant risk with Panda, sandbox, etc?

If you guys give me green light I will go for it!!!! so thanks!

Yeah its good to go but don't expect to get rich from it, be happy if you reach $30 or so a month if you reach the top 3. There is nothing to worry about if there would be anohter EMD at top5, especially not if its another thin PR0 site as such it would only indicate that it's probably an easy kw.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks

  • Um...what are you waiting for? A $20 cpc keyword...and that for page one competition? Tell me and I'll go buy it.

    • What do you mean, stop chickening out and just go for it?!?!?
  • Dude...it's $9 for a domain...you could have a site up by tomorrow...with content and earning in a few weeks....

    • I'm actually getting the hosting so it's $50 bucks, but still, you are right! lol, I just needed one more green light. You are it and I guess you mean the competition is easy, right? In that case I'm going for it OMG!!!!

  • edu, just thought I'd mention that I enjoy your enthusiasm. I know you're new at all of this, but I really do admire how enthusiastic you are. Most "newbies" are afraid to ask questions, put-off by the thought of having to work hard, etc.

I'll bet a year from now you'll be the one helping others and definitely earning more than $30 a month.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Thanks man! Hopefully your kind words will become true! and boy will I be happy!!! I've made my mind up now! I'm going for it!

... and thanks for the link. How awesome is a free hosting site!!!!!

Thing is if I go for it and it works I will literally go mad and start making tons of websites (after I get the hold of it of course) So I would like unlimited domains to be hosted. However this could be a better option if I'm not going to be making more than 5 this yeay so...

...mmm, more thinking to be done! but thanks anyway!!!!
  • And you don't need $50 hosting out of the gate. Hostgator should suffice right away. The max plan you need there would be $10 a month with unlimited domains.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • BEST FORUM EVER! thanks!!!!!
    • Actually I meant 4.95 x 12 months at bluehost, host gator is more expensive in this way, but thanks anyway!

A year should be enough and not to much to test out a site right?
      • [2] replies
  • Month to month should work too.

Let me get straight with you. If you are expecting to build your first site, fill it with quality content, have everything go perfectly smooth in wordpress, rank it on page one, monetize it and start watching the money roll in...Bzzzzzzzzzzt. Have I got a surprise for you.

The point is, the first part about getting started, is getting started. The next part is doing something. Do not expect to be perfect. It looks like you have done some research, some homework, and made a best guessed estimate that this is something worth buying. Therefore, we all have to start from somewhere. So, get started, be prepared to stumble, fall, scrape a knee, get up, keep going.

One of the best things I ever heard was a guy talking about teaching his son to play baseball. As the father of a 2 yr old, I can relate. Just imagine teaching him how to hit. He is going to be awful the first few times. Am I going to tell him, strike 3, yer out of here after 3 pitches? No way. It will be the continuous message, You Can Do It. Or, swing til you hit.

The same applies here. Research, Build, Execute, Learn, Refine, Repeat. Eventually, if you keep swinging until you hit, you will reap the rewards. A saying I like to go back to is "The only way this won't work is if you don't do it". I said this to someone a few years ago about a project.

Be prepared to make mistakes, be prepared to fall, but keep your enthusiasm, and look at it that way all the way through and you'll be fine.

    Swing til you hit.
