Hello guys, I am new to affiliate marketing, and I just wanted to ask you guys some beginner questions.

I understand that you need to create pages targeting long tail keywords so that you can easily rank for them. But I don't understand what kind of content has to be on that page.

Should that page be a blog post talking about how great the product is with the link to the affiliate product?

Should it be a sales page?

I have never ran into a website just dedicated to selling products before. I can't imagine what it looks like or what kind of content it will have!

Check some review sites, search for ""productname" reviews" and see what the guys ranking top 3 are doing.

Other than that, this is a pretty broad question, the answer will depend on your monetization strategy. I'd say always have 2 monetization channels on your site. (For example adsense + amazon)

Think in terms of what will be useful for the visitor. That's what google is aiming for in the long run.
A single one page sales letter woulnd't be very valuable to the visitor resulting in poor rankings. You'd have to get pretty creative to have a sales letter on the homepage.
You could have a static homepage, and a blog section dedication for posting useful articles

It seems you got it all backwards.

You need to have your website ready, and everything in place BEFORE getting traffic.

You won't be getting much traffic without that, and even you do, what can they do
after visiting your website? Just leave.

What you are talking about is micro-niche or review website, where you pick one
product and write reviews about it, aiming to rank high for it. Such websites have
fallen out of Google's grace and are losing their rank.

Much better option is pick a niche and create one big authority website. You add
helpful and quality articles and rank for various keywords. You can use that site to
    promote many different products.

Also, by including opt-in forms on your website pages you can build your list and
    further expand your reach.

Okay, thanks for all the replies guys! So basically, creating a website just for the sake of a review of a specific site is not the way to go any more...
What I should be doing is creating a giant authority website based on a niche, and try to lead people to my squeeze page where I will try to sell them through email?
I think I am getting it, though I understand this will take a lot of creativity and not so straight forward.

If you have a great traffic on a website then there are more chances to make a sale to the potential customer.
