Is <h1 class="hideText"> SEO spam?

I asked one of our web designers to build me a landing page and he hid all the text with <h1 class="hideText"> and replaced it with images so he could use a certain font.

He swore google was cool with this and it was as SEO friendly as a normal H1. I couldn't find anything on the internet yet supporting him. Is class="hideText" spam to google?

I have used this with no problems before but it does not need to be hidden just behind the images. Also when I used it it was a while ago so it might cause more problems now.

The right way to do it is called css image replacement.

I'll admit I've done the same, however something as blatant as calling your class hideText just stinks of someone reporting you for something....

Alternatively maybe try using a Google font like Water Filters Fast (see headers), or use sIFR.
