How did you learn SEO ?

As somewhat of an SEO newbie, I am amazed at the amount of knowledge I find on this forum every day for a subject that has no formal training. And I can't help but wonder how everyone learned it. Did you simply read, read and read some more (my current method)? Did somebody teach you? Did you develop your own proprietary methods over time? It seems all the veterans have at least a few 'secret methods' nowadays.

As for me, I am determined to know this stuff and I've become slightly obsessed with it, but I think that will only help me in the long run. Curious for your input.

Most of the information can be found on the google webmaster blogs, I first got the ideal about seo/affiliate marketer from the Google sniper 2.0 and most of what I know now from the warrior forum...

Most of the information I learned was from free ebooks that talked about SEO and basic things like how to structure a website, H1 tags, h2 tags, Title Tags etc.

Sometimes I think people package the same information in books and then sell them...lol.

Also there was a couple of blogs I read that helped out but I think the best way to learn is to actually DO IT and learn from your mistakes. There is no better teacher than experience.

Yeah I met a guru in this area. He told me about link farm like 3 years ago and at that time. Google was a bitch to him. His bitch I mean. He manipulated Google like no tomorrow. They can't demote him no matter what. His page rank technique was also employed 3 years ago ahead of everyone here in this forum. We are not just caught on the end tail of it. yet we feel like we know everything.

any how -- I made a mistake to piss him off good and so he is off my radar now. Any way he advices that I should go into facebook and get traffic there instead of Google. Google is fickle and you know it is a job in itself to rank first.

But I do believe in building links -- and that to automate my stuffs. And you know what -- he has not used automated software provided by nobody. He wrote for him to use. It's the way to go if you have the money and the talent.

i don't have time to read and wanted a fast answer that works.. so this is what i did.

    1. analyze keywords of your site. Take those with low competition & like 100 searches monthly.

    2. buy SEO packages and implement each package on each keyword that you have analyze from step 1. You can find a lot of cheap packages from this forum or other forums.

    3. track all the results in 1 month time.

    4. choose the top 5 keywords that perform best.

    5. look at the SEO packages that you have implement on those 5 keywords.

    6. try to implement those packages again on other keywords.

    7. if it works, then you roughly know the seo trick.

SEO packages are cheap and it saves me a lot of time..

The basics which I learned from the books are like H1, h2, h3 tags, Title with the keyword in it, Keyword density, etc. As you do this again and again, I learned new strategies by tweaking and modifying some of my own sites as well as clients sites until you find the perfect balance of optimization. Its not always about optimization, sometimes its about relevancy as well. Google is looking for sites that is the most relevant to what the users are typing in google. So, if you structured your site in those ways with the keywords, etc, You can pretty well rank your sites well in search engines.

I got started in SEO last year. I'm a recent computer science graduate from the University of Wisconsin, so I like to take an analytical and mathematical approach to understanding SEO. My senior year I did a project for an Algorithm Analysis course on the Mathematics Behind Google's PageRank Algorithm. As well as the IR algorithm which is what the Panda algorithm uses to determine final ranking score in Google.

I learned mine way back in '80 - '82 when I attended DeVry. Search engines were a whole different animal back then and bulletin boards dominated the navigation of the net. And...get this...Yahoo was the search engine. Google wasn't even born back then.

Then again, Atari was the game station of the decade. lol

    Testing / testing / testing.

Reading forums but know who to trust, there is so much bad information spread.

Talk a lot with professional SEO suppliers, not always that easy ofcourse as most don't like to share much so you need to be in a certain position for that, I sell SEO for cheap so SEO companies contact me and then I hear them out about what else they do for their customers apart of buying my packages.

Then again, testing/testing/testing, dont believe people right away on their blue eyes

Btw testing = not easy. Sometimes you build links and you see results within a week that later on get you penalized, and sometimes you build links that you think don't work but then 3-4 weeks later poof there you are without risking any penalty later on, so it's not like oh I build links today and tomorrow or next week I know how it works out.

    So key = split testing!

ps You won't learn SEO in the WSO section here, so much old and flawed information, thats how I started and later on I could start to restudy cause 90% was plain wrong.

I learned from lots of reading and trial and error.

One of the very first things I learned was Google is FOS. If you follow their lame "TOS", you website will never be found in their search.

The key is finding the happy medium. Push the envelope with link building, but don't get crazy.

We were born with the Knowledge encoded in our DNA !
    As simple as that
    j/k

Now seriously, no one has "learned" - i.e. there is no past tense, this is not an ever finished practice. You learn everyday, adapt and evolve with the ever changing reality.

Forums, blogs and studying will help you a lot, will guide you along the way, but it's you who will have to try things out and gather the conclusions that will make you one day - hopefully - an expert.

I was taught by my web designer and then I took what he taught me and ran. I had hired out two SEO companies with little to no success and after two years I decided to take it over myself. In six months I did what two SEO companies could not do ( or did not want to do ) in two years. I have my most competitive keyword and most searched for my service on the 1st page and high on the 1st page. I do it the slow and steady way or what's known as the natural way.
