Depends on the website model. If it is a company, you should definitely play with your Facebook fan page and keep it updated. In any or another way it helps.

facebook page can't give you any benefit in serp. its good for just social traffic.

Facebook likes, are heavily underused.

IF you rank with a Facebook fan page (which you can, if you know how to get all the Y Y Y Y (desc, header, title, url). If people Like, its sort of a mini version of an opt-in with email marketing.

Everytime you post something, they will recieve it on their home. Far more successfull than Tweets, if you ask me.

Dont overdo it though, cause unlike is as easy to hit as like

Facebook fanpages are a way to bring traffic to your website via the links and getting everyone involved.

You have to have a real following. Most followings that you buy are usually fake profiles and won't bring traffic to your website (since the profiles are fake).

As for the SERP, not sure if facebook likes help your rankings. Don't think so though.
