Backlinks from document sites alone aren't going to get you ranking for most keywords, however they do allow you to diversify your backlink portfolio somewhat. I use them all the time, they're nothing ground breaking but varied backlinking is always the key to a successful campaign.

I actually haven't yet tapped into this form of backlinking and was wondering just how effective it can be
