My personal 2 year old site has disappeared from Google SERP's

Just noticed a few others have had similar problems, but my site has also completed disappeared from the SERPs in Google.

I am totally devastated. This site is 2 years old, has over 70 pages, and promotes my business as a musician, performing at weddings and parties in the UK. I had 6-7 pages which each ranked in the top 10 for various wedding music related key words.

My top phrase was "modern wedding music" where I was number 1 position for a few months. Now I am nowhere to be seen. The thing is some of my competitors have far less content than me, less links and are still ranking very well.

Can anyone advise? If there is a kind soul who could help me, please PM me, or reply in this thread and I'll give you the URL.

I have done no black hat techniques in linking, only some manual blog comments, forum posting and Web 2.0 properties

P.S This has also happened in the same couple of weeks that I found out I am losing my full-time job as a teacher!!!

I'm sorry for all the misfortune man I imagine that must be pretty tough. I would recommend just holding tight for now. Nobody is sure exactly what's going on. Just hope for the best

Thanks for your post. It doesn't make any sense to me at all. There is nothing in Google webmaster tools which says something is wrong.
My site is still indexed but just won't rank for any keyphrases

Does anyone want to take a look at it? I can send the url as a PM.

I am still in shock about this. It's not like I have a thin affiliate site with no real content.

I think there are a couple of possibilities:

          1. How good is the quality of the content you post?

Google has been paying attention to the quality of content and I believe they've even been sending real people to websites in order to better judge the quality of what is posted on them.

          2. How fresh is your content?

Panda wasn't a one time thing, Google is still updating as we speak. One of the big things they're looking at right now is the freshness of content. They're trying to weed out pages that are really stale.

          3. How relevant is your content?

Google is also paying attention to the relevancy of content in relation to the keywords it ranks for. This seems like it shouldn't be much of a problem but many people have been trying to rank for keywords with content that isn't relevant enough to those keywords. Content about "Wedding Music", for example, needs to focus on wedding music.

Google is trying to keep us on our toes but I think that they're also trying to make browsing the web, and searching for things, into a better experience for everyone. It can be a bit frustrating for some but if you focus on fresh, relevant and high quality content then you shouldn't have too much to worry about in the future.

          I hope this helps!

I will have a look as well if you pm me the url. I suspect you have some on-page problems (over-optimization) but let me have a look and I'll get back to you asap.

As a matter of interest, none of my sites have been negatively affected by Google's updates during the last 14 months so hopefully I will be able to give you some advice on what to do.

I read a thread a week or so ago about Google penalising 'over-optimized' sites. What does this exactly mean?
I always put the keyword or phrase in the META Title and Description tags at the beginning. I also sometimes out it in an <h1 >tag aswell. Is that too much?
If there is good content on the page, it seems daft to penalise a site for that? I could understand if you are keyword stuffing..

    Hey there

Im feel bad when i hear this.

I would say everyone should stick to their profession.
So if you are teaching, you should concentrate on teaching, and you might want to hire an SEO expert to help you..

You will get burnt out trying to figure out stuff that you are not specialized in.

Check you onpage and off page factors to check over optimization factors. You can write to Google about your situation if there is any kind of penalty they will notify you via email.

There was or there is on-going algorithmic changes being done. It has nothing to do with what you did or didn't do, so don't worry about that. This is all on Google. Many people have been experiencing the same thing since Sunday.

This is why you never rely on just Google, your niche has the potential to get a lot traffic from Facebook and other sources.

But as far as Google is concerned, you can either continue building links, add new content or simply wait and see if the site comes back.

If your site has dissapeared then you should contact google and for sure re-do some seo and build new links.... get ahold of google first through for their point of view, then you will have the direction in which to run.

Thanks for all your comments. I'm looking at my site in detail to figure out what the problem is. Could it be this I wonder?

I host my site with Yola and I noticed a few months ago after installing a blog that for every post, Google was indexing my /category, /archive and /tag pages, as well as my main post, showing the first a couple of lines of the article.

Could this be duplicate content in Google's eyes? Surely the system they use is smart enough to know that it isn't????

I host 2 sites in Wordpress and I know you can use plugins to <noindex> pages and use your host control panel to edit your robot.txt file to stop Google from indexing /category, /tag pages etc. But in Yola, I don't have that function.

    Thoughts?
