Best Off-Page SEO Strategy to rank a local business?

I was wondering what the best way is to rank local businesses in Google.

For example, I`m doing a website for a local business. She`s a naturopath and homeopathy doctor. So, when people type in for example, `naturopath x city`, I want her to show up.

How do I go about doing this? What SEO services should I go for?

    If the website is brand new and you're building it you'll need a more subtle approach. Try building links in low volume but provide a high volume of social signals.

    If the website is old and she's had it for a while I would recommend taking a much more aggressive strategy.

      The website is very new, roughly a couple weeks old.

      My question is, how do I get backlinks - and how do I know those backlinks are actually helping my rank?

    The age of the website does indeed determine the level of intensity with which you will build backlinks. However, do ensure that you maintain consistency in the number of backlinks built over a period of time, as well as good link diversity. This will make sure that the website eventually gains credibility in the eyes of Google.

    Apart from that, all the other things mentioned by sovereignn are also essential.

      I've read that I should stay consistent, funny you mention that.

      How many backlinks should I be getting a day? a week? a month?

    We have great luck with simple screen shot videos using the keywords and then back linking the video.

      So I could make a video for her company, upload it to youtube, use the keywords in the title / description and link her main site in the description as well?

    Use anchor text whenever you posted on a website or when participating on a do follow forum discussions. Google might see those links that can build backlink to your site.

      Social Bookmarks >> Press Release >> Local Directories >> Manual Blog Comments on Relevant Blogs

      If they're still not in #1 after that, make 5 manual 2.0 blog posts and link to the local site.

      Basically you want to go slow and use somewhat white hat links, no spammy tools, don't want to risk getting the site deindexed

    That would be google placing.
    Unless you want to rank her in the normal organic searches.

    Dont worry too much on the intensity, although i do believe in consistency.

    But think of it this way, when a hot news comes out like for example "MJ passed away", many people were talking, many people were sharing news. It was a jump in backlinks, from 0 to tens of thousand world wide.

    And google ranked it immediately.

    And in some situations, you cant help your business or services if they go viral.

    So is it your fault that your news goes viral? No. So google doesnt really penalize that, just make sure your links are quality.

    Not some spam links that are same.

    You need to build dofollow backlinks on high PR pages using your targeted keyword "naturopath x city" as anchor text. It would be best if the backlinks are also contextual (surrounded by text related to your keyword) and on relevant sites (eg: medical). Don't over optimize your anchor text when building backlinks (using the same keyword over and over again). Use variations of your keyword, synonyms, etc when building the links.

    Citations or NAP(name address phone number) is the best strategy to rank local sites. make sure the NAP is properly coded with the right schema at site and is consistent across all the listings..
