Changing Wordpress Directory and Its Effects

Hi there,

One of my websites is a Wordpress site which I installed in the main directory.

I would like to move it to a sub-directory.

The site is #1 in Google for my most valuable search term.

If I move it, will I suddenly have a bunch of broken links or some other problem that will destroy all of my SEO work?

The reason I'm doing this is because I want my homepage to be a static site, instead of a Wordpress site. However, I want to link from the static page to the Wordpress site which would now be on the same domain but in a sub-directory.

  • Yes you can move it, but why ?

    You can have a static html site as your frontpage. Just go to reading settings > change front page to static page. Then add a custom template for that Page under Page attributes. Customize the page template however you want. Instead of using templates, you could also just create a page-{insertpageslughere}.php file in your theme folder and wordpress will use that file for the page that matches that slug.

    For example if your page is http://www.domain.com/awesome-page. (This page would be made frontpage under Reading Settings) Then your slug is "awesome-page" and your file name should be page-awesome-page.php. Also works with Page IDs i believe, and same goes for categories. With posts, it's based on the post type - whether "post" or a custom post.

    Anyway, If you do move your site for this silly reason, you'll just need to do 301 redirect it to the new directory. It's not a guarantee that you'll keep your rankings, but most times it works fine.

  • Now that my new website is done, I reviewed this message to try to figure out how to accomplish my goal.

    Here's the thing. I've always had my site set up so that the homepage is a static page, but of course the theme attributes are still present. In other words, the header graphic for the theme is still the header graphic for the static page.

    Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my original post at to what I want to do.

    I have a brand new, static sales letter, that looks killer. When people go to my site, I want to use this sales letter and that includes using its header and all of its graphical elements.

    Way back when I first put the site up, I should have probably just put up a static page in the index.html file and linked from it to the wordpress site in a sub-directory.

    Since I didn't do that, and wordpress was installed in my root, I can't figure out how to use this new static page as my homepage without moving the wordpress site.

    If I'm not being clear, please let me know and I'll try again. However, any help with solving this problem is much appreciated.
