why not use 'xyzsite.com' or 'xyzhq.com' instead? it'll be easier to remember and from my experience has the same effect on SEO.

If you are looking for direct traffic then you should go for xyzsite.com instead of xy-z.com. its hard to remember this kind of URL.

I would go with a more generic boarder domain name. For example say your longtail is Cheap small blue widgets.

Your domain would be widgets.com or Buywidgets.com

Then your url for the page your a ranking for would be Buywidgets.com/Cheap-small-blue-widgets

All of my websites are built like this. You can then go on to build more content about other widgets.

      This.

I much prefer this method to hundreds of long-tail EMD's. Which, personally, I don't think have nearly as much power as they used to have.

You can add an S or put the word "Site" after, so it would be xyzsite.com or you could put the word "the" in front. I have ranked sites with one dash so that's fine too.

Once cool method of coming up with a domain name is to put your keyword in Google then on the left side under all results press more search tools then click on related searches.

Use one of the words that google has bolded either in front or after the keyword in the domain name just make sure it makes some sense.

For example I put cat food and click on related searches and I see one of the bold words is "best" so I can use bestcatfood.com/net/org if not available I go for another bolded word on the list like "direct" catfooddirect.com

Google feels the bolded words are related to the niche topic cat food.

    Hope that helps!

Actually I think it's pretty much the opposite.

whatisthebestbplacetobuybluewidgets.com looks kind of ridiculous to me.

I suggest you to ignore the hyphen and numbers in the domain. Normally user gets difficult while browsing your website directly from browser tab. The domain name should be easy to remember for users.

I've had no problems with hyphens. One even two in a domain compared to an EMD.

But on that note I don't know if EMDs are really the way to go anymore. Seems like the Big G is starting to slap niche sites, especially when they find an EMD with questionable content in the #1 spot.

Try something close to the term but not it exactly. Or go with something broader, and hit on even more keywords in the niche.

I think it HAS been the way to go for awhile now. If your pages are properly optimized and you throw a few backlinks at them they'll rank just as well as any EMD.

And it's a lot easier to manage than hundreds of EMD's with 1-2 articles each. Not to mention Google is trying to come down on these types of sites.

See amazon and walmart? What comes to your mind when you hear these names? What I want to point is that you can use some names (even short ones) that is "catchy" or those ones that can't easily be forgotten.

      Hyphens are A-OK.

I'm just not really sure if EMD's are as powerful as they used to be. So I prefer to target keywords on the "inner" pages of my sites.

Really it's just a personal preference.

It doesn't matter. Its going to matter even less in the next few years. Either will work but more importantly, make sure your content is relevant to the terms you are trying to rank for. Keep in mind, there are tons of websites (both branded and non branded) with the targeted keyword no where in their domain name. Get either domain, just make sure your content includes the targeted keywords and do the same for your h1, title tags and description. Then build quality links and the domain name won't make a bit of difference.

I still think they have SOME sort of influence. I do a ton of keyword research and I still see plenty of long tails ranking well for low competition terms. And they usually have low quality content or hardly any content at all. (Plus very few, if any, backlinks.)

But they're not as powerful in moderately competitive niches.
