Low Adwords Competition

I just wanted to get your guys input, I've found some good traffic keywords that look real easy to rank. However in the google keyword tool the ad competition is low and when I search the keyword in google no ads pop up. My question is if I planned to monetize the site with a product affiliate program does the low competition on adwords and no ads popping up mean I probably shouldn't bother pursuing it? Or could I still be successful with these alternatives to adsense.

I get a little concerned when I don't see *anyone* advertising. This could mean you found a great little place... or it could be a niche without much money.

Don't worry about Adsense in that niche. Just use affiliate links

  Anyone having a good deal of success with monetizing a site that has no adwords competition? I'd love to hear from someone whose been there done that.
