I Have Just Made My Competitor Disappear In The SERPs

So it is true. You can actually make your competitor's sites drop significantly in rankings these days.

I had my site (homepage) at no.3 and another backup site at 5 in the rankings for a very lucrative kw. I planned to flip one of those sites so that is why I built two. A competitor was at no.1 and another at 2. This has been the case for a very long time.

As I wanted to be top dog, I used two of the most popular ranking services on WF on my site at no.5 and on both competitors sites at no1 and no2. I did this to ensure that if I went down, so did my competitors.

Today, after a little over 2 months, all those three sites that I bombarded with links have disappeared beyond 100 in the rankings for that keyword. My number three site is at no1.

To me, this proves with very little doubt the rumours lately that you can get competitors sites' penalized severely. This is scary.

I think my favorite rapper said it best "DO DIRT, GET DIRT" ...DMX.

Why would you want to hurt somebody else business, they work hard just like you and if I didn't know any better I'd say you came on here looking for a congrats or something.

Well back in 1998 he was lol. I just always like that line do dirt get dirt, basically another way of saying what goes around comes around.

I feel a little weird discussing my favorite rapper on the warrior forum

Today's update has hit MOST of the sites that had generated backlinks by any of the methods that many are doing. Web 2.0s/Article Directories/Blogs. So if that guy spammed his competitor, its disappeared today just because of those links. Google thought they were spamming bad links and penalised them.

This is exactly what I referred in another post that today google has gone way beyond normal. By changing their goals to targetting Internet Marketers rather trying to improve their SERPS quality for readers, they have actually hurt both. Reader quality has gone down the drain and so have most internet marketers.

What google missing is most high quality content is created by those people only who know about SEO. Which webmaster does not try to do some SEO work on their sites huh? So if google takes them all down, so will all the stuff that a reader wants will go. Google should focus on removing crappy content websites and not good quality content sites. If they do this, more and more of these kinds of threads will start coming up.

Negative SEO effectiveness has gone to a whole new level with today's update.

Whats wrong with web 2.0 site article directories and blogs christ ?? If your building good web 2.0 propertys and adding videos and pics, nicely written or submitting to ezine articles not saying that ezine is anything special but whats wrong with these two forms of backlinks surely its not all about private blog backlinks today is it ?

For sure not a coincidence that it happened today when a huge update is rolling. You didn't mention what happened to the no 5 site. Still negative seo seems to be achievable.

The number 5 site together with my competitors have all disappeared to oblivion.

I think you have been listening to too much rap music and have missed the point of my post. There is only 1 spot at no.1 for any keyword search. So attacking my enemy so as to replace him is all part of the SEO game in competitive niches. SEO is not Sunday church. My post was just my surprise that negative SEO appears to be actually possible.

Even if it is an update, but the update suggests to me that negative SEO seems to work.

I've never been one to argue and I'm not about to start now but it is marketers like you that google really dislikes and so do I. People like you see other sites in their way and instead of working hard like they did you want the easy way/fast way to the top by using slimmy underhanded methods.

At least I can be proud of the way I make my money. I can't believe no one else has a problem with this. This is the guy who will get your site banned yet no one said anything about it.

I'm not talking about google. Google is simply trying to make their business better by removing garbage sites. I would do the same, it's no different than when you remove a spam comment from your blog.

People panic so fast it aint funny, if google made a mistake I'm sure they will fix it. I dislike anyone who would intentionally harm another person's business. I bet you would feel different when somebody does negative seo on one of your sites.

This situation may have been caused by google's new update but that doesn't change the fact that the op tried to do harm to his competitor's site.

You are contradicting yourself. I just managed ( I believe) to remove 2 great sites belonging to my competitors so as to position my own site at no.1.

So were my competitors sites garbage sites? If the answer is no, than I hope you are getting the point of why some people might be upset with this update and its implications.

Good for you. I too love competitors with your Brady Bunch mindset.

I used to be like that when I started out 11 years ago with IM. But after seeing Google de-index, penalize and do whatever it likes with my hard work, I kind of grew up. One day, you may see things differently too.

I too was proud of my lemonade stand when I was a kid when I tried to help my broke parents. But proud as I was with my business, it did not stop us from losing our family home.

Now that I am a grown up with a grown up mind, I am far more prouder of how much I make and how much that income helps those around me rather than just how pleased Google are with me. Google do not care less about you or your business.

You didn't hurt Google. You hurt another marketer, one of us.

There are good odds your "competitor" was a member of this very forum.

If you would do that to anyone why would I believe you wouldn't do that to any of us?

I should not believe this, nor should any member here. You already did it to a fellow marketer. You cannot say you didn't, you already said you did.

People, how do you know he didn't tank one of your sites? Answer: you don't!

So, why are you making this type of behavior acceptable? Even laughing at it.

Think about it. He just took down a fellow marketers site, maybe your site and you're ok with this behavior? This is funny to you?

His family lost his home. I can understand the anger and frustration. But he just took money out of another marketers families mouth and maybe it was yours.

If you're ok with this you need to ask yourself why?

The webspam update has targeted sites that engage in keyword stuffing, link schemes
cloaking, doorway pages and contain duplicate content which has been put there to fool the search engines. So if your competitor's website was engaging in any of the above tactics it will not be seen again for some time to come, at least in the first few pages.

This is the reason I prefer getting a good flow of traffic outside of the SERPs. It takes some time to achieve though.

Negative SEO is just plain ol' scary! I understand that in this particular case negetive seo may not have been the cause of the sites dropping. Still, Google has, as far as I know, no way of knowing who builds the backlinks to any particular site.

This is unacceptable. I am displeased that you would come on this forum where most are honest, good hard working people and talk about backlinking to your competitors site in hopes to take it down.

That's just not right and anyone with a sense of decency would agree with me (at least I would hope).

What I find even more offensive is that so many people here are chiming in with comments as if what you did is acceptable. I assure you it is not!

You come here to brag about reprehensible activity and would expect any honorable man to not take exception to this?

    What you did is wrong!
And all forum members should be chastising you not agreeing with you or making chicken s***t excuses why this type of behavior is ok.

    Deplorable at the very least.

This is silly. Why wouldn't you target your site first, then decide on blasting the others based on those results?

Regardless, it's likely the change is due to the update yesterday.

Not that I agree with going around nuking a single person's portfolio of sites to put them out of business....But for those who are up in arms that a person would perform negative SEO, how different is it really than outranking a competitor, or dominating terms with multiple sites? What about ALL the other sites that get more exposure because 1 site got nuked? Should they be thankful? You should be blaming Google for allowing it.

When you out rank them it means that you are better at your craft than they are. When you outrank them you did not physically do anything bad to them. It was a competition and you won with honor and dignity.

If you are racing someone in the 100 yard dash is it ok to punch them in the jaw so you can win? And did you really win? No, you did not you were to weak to win honorably.

And your statement of "You should be blaming Google for allowing it" is like saying you should curse God for planting Coca plants (no ref to Google being godlike intended). Or espousing the incredulous belief that if we didn't have guns there would be no crime. If a man at a restaurant went to use the restroom and left his laptop would you take it? Why not? In accordance with your previous statement you should blame him for leaving it.

Don't tell me it's not the same thing because it is.

Well it depends what are the rules of the sport are. It is OK to tackle somebody to the ground in Rugby or American football, but you can not do that in cricket, baseball or soccer without suffering a penalty. I am not legally trained, but I have not heard of any law in the U.S or anywhere that says that negative SEO is illegal. I did not ask Google to index my site or index the thousands of links to my competitors by the way.

Was it OK for John McCain to say bad things about Obama's record in the election in '08? Was it OK for Steve Jobs to publicly insinuate how poor MS products were? Was it OK for Pepsi and Coke to say bad things about each other? Was it OK for Ali to mock how ugly Frazier was in an effort to ruin his confidence pre-fight? Even God himself mocked Goliath before he had David kill him.

Ensuring that my competitors went down so as to leave my other site at the top is just good business. The competitors should have protected themselves too.

I do not care too much if I lose my rankings as I already built another site to replace the current one and also have a reasonably responsive list. This is all just good business sense. If my competitors were silly enough to rely on Google for the family grocery money, than I think Darwin coined a term for that. Hopefully "most" WF members are learned enough not to be so naive.

Relying on Google for traffic is as foolish as relying on Adsense for your mortgage. Google traffic and Adsense should just be treated as bonuses within a more concrete marketing plan.

Being angry at negative SEO is like deciding to enter Chicago politics and then being upset that your fling with a transexual and recreational cocaine habit have been exposed by the media.

Another old rapper said something like, "All is fair in love and war".
If you do not share that mindset yet, sooner or later somebody else who does will usurp your rankings...guaranteed. By the way, have you noticed the name of this forum? Why do you think it is called that way and not something like the "picnic" forum?

I have received a lot of PMs asking me which services I used and how I did it. This tells me that what Google have allowed possible will have serious consequences. All of you who want us WF members to hold hands and sing Kumbaya can pretty much kiss your organic traffic goodbye forever if negative SEO is confirmed by the "experts" to be a permanent reality.

WOW all my rankings dropped for several websites, but not their sub pages?

DUDE Google is causing a TON of chaos with this new update.

There's no WAYYYYYY this is permanent. Haha. You must be joking me, out of your mind!

All but 1 of my sites were completely flown off the first page...

Yet several .edu sites on first page for search about VIAGRA? "make money online" now shows a blogspot post with NO CONTENT on it??

      No way is this permanent.

I'm not even going to worry about it.

NOTE TO ALL WHO READ THIS: Watch out. Be sure not to use Google as your main promotional source anymore. Nowadays its JUST. TOO. SKETCHY.

Its silly because you perhaps do not understand.

If I targeted my site and became penalized, the other sites would still be at 1 and 2. By targeting all 3, I ensured my second back-up site went to the top.

There's an old adage that what you sow, you will also reap. It's as true today as it has been through the ages. Enjoy your short-lived gain JK because the day is soon coming when the tables will be turned.

LOL. I have reaped it many times before already in over a decade in IM. I have come to accept it as just part of the business. You can not enter MMA and complain about being punched in the face. That is why I protect myself and my business in every step I make. I bombarded my site with links, but also ensured that my competitors will gain or equally lose out with me in effort to protect myself. As unlike them, I had spare sites ranking. Anybody who just allows a 6 figure site to just be there without any protection is very rich or is a clown and probably deserves whats coming to them.

JK, I'm not sure if anyone else has said it, but your strategy is the smartest I've read all month. Pity most people don't think.

There's nothing wrong with showing holes in a broken system. It actually needs to be done to prevent worse forms of exploitation.

PS: This doesn't mean I believe the OP's strategy worked, but the ethical debate some people are making is laughable.

And people still have a hard time understanding what is happening, and how "bad backlinks" can hurt YOUR sites and THEIR sites?

    Ouch...

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.
