Client wants SEO done.

Where the heck do I start?

I know a little bit about it (on-page seo, backlinks etc), but not much. A client wants me to do SEO for her.

I know SEO is an on-going thing, so I could probably charge her monthly. I also know that I'm not skilled at it, I don't know much about it.

When I type in her company name, she comes up third in Google (I come up first and second cause I use her website in my portfolio). However, when I type in, "homeopathy + city name", her business doesn't come up anywhere. Her sites only been up for about a month now.

I've submitted her site to Google Places but that's it. How do I get her website higher ranked when someone types in for example, "homeopathy + the city name", or "naturopath + city name"?

Any solid tips would be appreciated.

  • I'd recommend outsourcing if you don't have a clue what you are doing. Don't take on a job that you don't know you can complete or be successful in.

    • No offense but that is terrible advice.

You shouldn't outsource anything until you are comfortable doing it yourself. That way you can tell if the outsourced SEO is quality work or just an SeNuke blast.

Regardless, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing anything related to SEO right now until things settle down with the new update. Maybe submitting her site manually to Digg, Yellow Pages, etc but nothing too risky.

    • You really should hire someone that knows what they are doing. Especially with the recent Google updates, you could really damage your client's site if you are not careful.
  • If you dont know where to start how can you give advice on what to do and let alone charge....

And also as Legit said.... you need to really understand the industry before you can really look at outsourcing....

    • Really? Because I don't understand a damn thing about how my car runs, but I have no problem paying a mechanic to fix it.

I have no desire to understand the United State Tax Code. I pay someone to do that too.

So I should be learning how a car runs and studying the tax code before hiring people to take care of these things? There is not enough time in the day to be an expert at everything.

  • sorry that should have said.....

are you giving advice on how to fix his car....

    • Which again makes no sense. Of course I am not giving advice about how to fix any cars. Like I clearly said, I don't know **** about cars. That's why I pay someone to take care of mine.

Someone who doesn't know **** about SEO, shouldn't try learning it on a client's site. They should outsource to someone who does know what they are doing.
  • If I did not know what I was doing I would not recommend any companies to the client or outsource it through me as I will be the one that has to deal with the ****.....

I would only recommend someone who I know personally is up to scratch.....

Out source do what you like its not my business

    • It's no different than finding an attorney, a doctor, or an accountant when you need one. You don't need to study medicine to find a good doctor.

You just ask around, do your own research, or ask for references. Any SEO should be able to show you examples of work they have done.

  • haha yeah also agree with what you said in the above post...

I personally would not outsource to an SEO company until I had used them first on a personal site before I let them loose on a clients site.

I think we are agreeing.... I outsource rake loads of things so I love outsourcing :-)
