Google Ranking Updates in favour of Blogger

I have lots and lots of sites on Blogger.com just for many reasons and after this recent genocide of sites by Google I have noticed that pretty much all my Blogspot sites have moved up in the rankings -

Has this happened to anyone else?
&
Is this Google's way of using it's own products to take over their own Search Engine?

Blogger/+1/Adwords etc

Actually in most cases activity that is designed to restrict competition is considered illegal in just about every industry.

It can't hurt. The pages actually look good. Hell, the blogging interface is decent TBH. I haven't used it in years.

Of course these pages are 'properly optimized' for Google, which can't hurt. If you don't mind blogging I can't see what it would hurt to post a few times a day on Blogger.

Ranking higher has nothing to do with Blogspot/Blogger.

You rank web pages, not sub/domains.

So, there is absolutely no benefit from it being on a trusted domain owned by G? I'm curious if G allows penalties to be applied to blogspot blogs the same as a regular Joe's site... Or are they somehow excluded.

If not, there could be a potential benefit to blogger.

I just don't think this is true. It's easier to rank a new page on certain domains (like blogger or hubpages) than on a fresh URL in my experience. Much easier.

Believe what you want, I have both blogspot & Wordpress (self hosted) blogs 5+ years old, I've never noticed any benefit one way or the other on any of the sites I've built.

If your ranking super long-tail keywords it's going to rank regardless of what you use.

BTW, sub-domains are treated as separate domains, the root domain blogspot.com isn't doing anything for you as far as SEO.

Ok Yukon, I have to pick your brain a little... let's say I have a root domain, mysite.com and it catches a penalty from G for whatever reason. Does that then mean I can simply create a sub-domain and it wouldn't be effected by any penalties because sub-domains are treated as separate domains as you say?

I don't see how this can be true... but maybe I just need to be enlightened a bit.

      2. Google Maps
      3. Youtube
      4. Blogger....

        Another observation related to this.

One of my downed Affiliate websites has only ONE page left ranking in Google. Very high, like # 1 - # 3 for "keyword reviews". None of the other review pages on the website rank anywhere anymore. Only this one.

Gues who the affiliate network runs through for this ONE? Google Affiliate network off course... ALL OTHER PAGES in my site dropped, this is the only one that went up and incidently the only product review page that is using the Google Affiliate network. Coincidence?

So yes, I think a common theme is emerging here for me. google definitely pushing their own stuff more and more.

Remember the days when we would encourage visitors to our websites to use Google? we linked to them for free offering our visitors this neat service? we helped spread the word. we made google to a degree.

maybe we should do it again for someone else. google is not too big to fail i reckon. ask myspace and yahoo...

it's either that or join em. use and abuse the google properties. i will be posting deindexed content on blogger myself and check what happens....

Blogger definatly has a ranking advantage in the SERPs. I've seen it hundereds of times. Even blogger blogs which contain no original content rank on page 1 for product keywords yet original content with good on page SEO which is self hosted lags behind.

I really think the point that Google Loves Google is so correct.

I have tons of Blogspot Blogs and i have tested some of them with only one post just to see if this is right - I am page one after three years of not having done anything for it, it's ridiculous.

Also i do like Blogspot, it's free, easy to use for niche subjects and because it is Google you just click and add Adsense all over your site, I make quite a bit from Blogger with Adsense or Blogsense as we call it and it's worth taking another look now this has happened.

But Ketset raises an interesting point - There has to be some kind of competition rule doesn't there regarding this?

The US federal government. And yes if they are giving their own products better results they will have the DOJ climbing up their you know what. They are already being investigated by the FTC and the DOJ for antitrust violations. If they are indeed doing this they will get screwed. Because as big as Google is it cannot compete with Uncle Sam.

Actually this new update may give the DOJ and the FTC the ammo they need.

In the UK for example there are competition rules stating that in a certain industry a single company cannot control more than a specific percentage of that industry's income.

So if Google is getting 90% of searches on the internet made through them then if the UK competition rules applies they would have a problem as they doesn't allow any space for others.

Regarding this subject, does it even matter if you use your own custom domain on blogger or just use blogspot?

I know Nest28 has been successful with custom domains, but am wondering if it really matters in terms of rankings.

          Opinions?

In my experience custom domains seem to do better with blogger than having the blogspot.com version. Before I buy my custom domains I place articles on blogspot but they never rank or get indexed unless I buy a custom domain, the olny other way to have the same results is to backlink.

It is logical that Google prefers their own properties. They know they're in control. That means the sites are being run to their specs. They have good optmizations. Plus it's all on Google's network, which reduces their expenses. They obviously get fast loading from their own servers, etc.

I know if I ran a giant website like them I'd prefer my own properties too!

well i have a blogspot blog created from late march, I solely use it to post spun content and link to my money site, so far I have posted 62 blog posts, and have now received 468 organic visits and ranks for 30-40 keywords. I had a large visitor spike in the past few days (see image). I have done zero link building or promotion for this blog since it's just a dummy throw away account.

I doubt you can do the same with a standalone domain.

I have noticed my blogger receiving a bump, recently. I find myself in the top 3 pretty consistently on related keywords.

And because I have setup as a "blog.mysite.com" subdomain, G views this as updated information (just my opinion) and it performs much better than my main domain.

At this point, I would never consider moving off my blogger account.

Google's latest update heavily skewed the rankings in favor of authority domains. Blogger is an incredibly authoritative domain. You won't see benefits for custom domains, since they don't reside on the blogspot.com domain, but you will see some benefits for your freebie blogspot blogs (ironic, isn't it?).

I have an "ancient" blog circa 2008 that used to rank #1 for "cat pictures" for a long time. Then I stopped updating and linking to it, moving on to other projects. It eventually fell out of the rankings completely and has been gone for about 3 years -- until this last update.

Now that freebie blogspot blog is back on page one and is earning a nice little chunk of AdSense money -- while the most recent post is still from 2008.

Why? Because Google's update puts way too much emphasis on domain authority -- and blogspot.com has massive amounts of domain authority.

No question. And it's only going to get more authoritative. That's why it seems like a safe strategy to leverage that authority and build at least an 'outpost' there into your mail marketing funnel.

This is true of other highly authoritative domains.

These domains not only have authority, they have PEOPLE. Since they're so heavily trafficked it's easy to leverage some of that audience into your own subdomain.

The only thing that is going to shake Google up is Facebook announcing web search.

As much as I dislike Facebook I would LOVE to see it happen. Google would start freaking out and we'd finally have some real competition. I don't even think it'd be that hard. Just a simple partnership with Bing.

Just a quick update on my Blogger site...I decided to make the leap to Wordpress.

Well, I was VERY reluctant to make the move, because losing my rankings would mean losing my lively hood. But, the tools and customization of WP could not be denied. So I did it.

It is now 10 days later and here is my report - I see ZERO negative impact to SEO or search results. If anything, there has been a positive bump.

The conversion was fairly simple (but time consuming) with the Blogger Import Tools and 1-to-1 blogger URL redirects. (if anyone needs help private message me)

I will keep everyone updated on the status of the page, but so far I can say that the search impact on my site conversion (off of blogger to WP) has been a positive one...

    Stay tuned...
