  • The 'backlink removal' field doesn't exist. A new domain is the only way to ensure that all backlinks are gone.

    • I respect you, but I have a lot of experience with this. Get all your backlinks you want removed. Send emails to the site owners with URL and ask them to remove the link. Some will, some wont.

      If they dont, send them a DMCA notice, and maybe their host to get their attention. You can find who hosts a site here Web Hosting Search Tool | WhoIsHostingThis.com

  • Why do you need the links removed? If its because of a penalty by Google, then you can attempt to create more legit looking back links to drown the bad ones out. But if your site dropped recently, it might also have been because of Google's new update.

    • With 15 million at stake things change significantly. Let's face it, with a big enough budget you could just pay people to remove the links.

      Send them to a form that shows the link has been removed and send them a $20 by PayPal.

      Truth is: "link removal" is about to be the biggest niche in this industry. I can imagine people spitting out their WSOs right now!

    Find the server that the links are on & hit it with a hammer about 5 times (j/k).

    Don't forget, wear eye protection, safety first.

    Seriously, I doubt you'll remove any external links that you don't have access to.

  • Incredibly difficult, if not impossible. It'd be easier to just start fresh.

  • The advice that MisterRex proposed is spot on.

    A DMCA is a last resort, but under certain circumstances has and can be used for link removal. Heck, I believe I've even read Matt C. recommending using a DMCA if all else fails and have also seen it proposed as a solution on Webmaster Tools forum.

    • I'm not a lawyer or expert in this, but from all that I've read about it, I'm pretty sure that using DMCA for link take-downs is a misuse of that law. Whether or not the company served with the DMCA fights it is another story altogether.

      It would certainly be a lot easier to just remove the link than to fight it in court. I think that is why Google so quickly removes links to sites with pirated content and so forth, even though they have a "right" to link to it if they want to.

      How is a link "copyrighted" anyway? If it can be used for that, then I don't see how the internet can survive, as it is one vast web of links.

      Of course, I could be completely wrong on this.


      I've looked for Matt's recommendation on using DMCA notices to take down links and I can't find it anywhere. Can you please provide link to his comments? Thanks.
  • You are not the one who lost the site, there are thousands. The only way is to try another domain with low competitive keyword and build links effectively and with different sources.

  • You can remove your backlinks but its a very...very time consuming task. You can use backlink analyzer programs like SEO spyglass, ibacklinkspro, majesticseo, ahrefs, etc.. to analyze each one of them and go to the url to remove them. No automation here just pure manual work.

    My recommendation: Build links to cover up your bad backlinks. Quality links.
  • This is really scary that the only option many linkbuilders have is to file DMCA requests. This is going to waste so much time and create so much unintended havok. The only reason this is going to work is because web hosts are extremely sensitive to DMCA requests and will shut down entire websites if a webmaster doesn't take action.

    The solution to this problem is to give webmasters a way to disavow bad links in the Google Webmaster Tools interface, but Matt Cutts says they don't have any plans to provide that functionality.
  • I have never bought links, but I used an article submitter.
    The route I am going to try is go to WMT, look up the sites linking to me, log in and delete my account.
    I don't know if this will work, because the first 6 I tried said I was not a member, but Google is showing hundreds of links.
    In that case, if Google gives me a notice of unnatural links, I can say what I have done and give them a list of those that I have no access to.

      I made three attempts to do as they recommended, but got the same reply to all of them:
      'Google thinks you may have done something naughty, but we're not going to tell you where ....'.

      I give up now, they can do what they want.

    Will it be good idea to purchase a new domain name and make it point to penalized domain's name servers and close/dump the penalized domain name without any 301.302 redirects?

  • If a site is one that is really profitable (or has been before), and you dont want to part with it, instead of spending time trying to figure out how to remove bad links and then (assuming you figured it out) going through one by one asking webmasters to remove your links, use that time to build quality links, so you can have a better link portfolio.

    You can not bring down authority sites with bad backlinks, because they have lots of quality links that kind of outweigh the o called "bad backlinks".

    Of course if a site is not making you much money and is not worth all that time and effort, just move on and build another one or just move to a new domain.

  • None of these people are going to sue you for filing a DMCA complaint.

    Here's the scenario...

    1.) You send them a DMCA complaint to remove their link to your website.
    2.) "OMG, this is a false complaint! I'll sue you!"
    3.) "Steinberg, Weinstein & Horowitz... False DMCA complaints, you say? We'd love to represent you for a $15,000 retainer.... Hello?.... Hello?"

    I love when folks say, "I'd sue them in a heartbeat and take everything!"

Those injured by misrepresentations in DMCA takedown notices or counter-notices are entitled to bring suit and recover actual damages, as well as costs and attorney's fees. 17 U.S.C ยง 512(f).

    You can't remove backlinks or if you can, it will be extremely difficult and will probably take most of your time. You should just make lots of new quality links or making a new domain is another great idea rather than wasting quality time figuring out how to remove them.

    • There really aren't any "true experts" in the field of link removal at this point. There are a lot of tips and tricks coming out that help you find contact information and convince webmasters to remove your links, but a lot of it is just social engineering kind of stuff.

  • If the links are really that bad they will get deindexed along with the rest of the site. Once deindexed Google will ignore them. Just focus on building good new links to the site, they will replace the bad links over time.

  • The only possible way to remove a backlink is to ask the web owner to remove the links but in most cases it's not possible and your stuck with it. It becomes a real mess in the long run as you need to change domains and redirect all the links to the new one.
