If its powered through a popular blogging platform like Blogger or Wordpress, wouldn't it do it automatically?

Wordpress notifies ping-matic(i believe) by default but you can add many others. And yes, it's useful to update multiple services you've updated your blog. I'm not sure what Blogger has by default...

Blogger blogs are usually indexing fast by Google but i think it doesn't has auto pinging and Wordpress has plug-ins for pinging too. And if you want to run other platform or you want to make sure about pining your blog/sites, you can use pingomatic.com or other similar tools.

Wordpress does it automatically. Which is kind of bad I think.

Wordpress pings even when you edit a post. If you reedit your content a lot (like I do) this means a lot of unnecessary pinging which may look spammy. I would advise you to use
MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer 3.0 (not affiliated at all) to control your pinging in WordPress.

    Hope this was helpful.

I've heard people say that Wordpress is more SEO friendly.
But blogger offers so much more customization for free, WP sounds overhyped...

I read not long ago that Blogger pings a couple of services automatically.

Ping-O-Matic automatically pings search engines once in 24 hours and after every update. And to get your content indexed and ranked quickly it is necessary to ping search engines.

I always hear this about the need to ping a zillion services to get your new posts out there and also the need for ping optimisers to stop ping spam. But I have websites where I have only ever used the default wordpress settings and have no problem getting indexed by google within minutes.

The only sites that seem to have had issues are the ones where I have added additional ping sites and have the ping optimisers installed?

Anyone else seen similar, ive search extensively online and havent found anywhere where anyone has done a definitive test for or against, all I see is comments that ping lists and optimisers should be used with nothing to back it up?

Not so very useful unless you have a consistent and lucid content creation. Prefer automated pings only if you are confident enough that you would not edit your posts every now and then. Else use online websites such as pingomatic. Pinging always helps you get your pages indexed faster.
