Google Penguin Opportunities

I to have had 2 decently earnings sites affected by Penguin ... for the worst.

After a few days of letting it sink in, it occured to me it's not all doom and gloom. The following are a few constructive responses that I plan on taking.

I'll leave affected sites alone and see what happens ... who knows there's a chance for improvement. However, I'm not banking on this and will pursue other opportunities / responses set out below.

  1. Crowded niches now not as crowded: With many niche sites punted off the charts, there are opportunities to build new niche sites to fill the void. This could be an excellent opportunity for many.
  2. Diversify traffic sources: It's time for me to ramp up my traffic source diversity. I've been too Google dependent and will go forward with a focus on alternative traffic sources. All projects will be planned with alternative traffic sources in mind.
  3. Buy sites for the content: Buying a site these days is risky unless you buy it for the content and research. There could be some fantastic content available for pennies on the dollar (videos, articles, etc.) you can use on new sites (I'd repurpose it big time). It's an efficient way to enter a new niche ... niches that were once crowded but now less so.
  4. Rebuild affected sites and make them MUCH better: If you have sites affected, you have an opportunity to rebuild them and make them better. I know one of my casualty sites could be rebuilt much better ... and that's exactly what I plan to do. All the research and content is done. I'll re-write it better and present it better.

More importantly, I know exactly what aspects of existing sites made money. I'll focus on the revenue-producing content. I'll get new hosting and a new domain; it will in no way be connected with the existing site(s). I'll proceed with white hat strategies only and focus on non-Google traffic sources. I anticipate it to only take 4 weeks to rebuild the new site which will be built for list building and monetize it much more efficiently (focused rather than the shotgun approach).
If you have large sites affected, you might be able to pinpoint a small percentage of it that generated the bulk of your revenue. Do a rebuild and focus on the revenue-generating parts only. Also rebuild with alternative traffic sources in mind.

If you're hopeful events will reverse, you may want to wait and see. I'm not so optimistic and so I'll be starting the rebuild tomorrow. If my affected sites rebound, I'll consider it a bonus.

Although Penguin hurts for the time-being, I think in the long-run it will serve me well. I'll further diversify traffic sources, place more emphasis on building up subscribers and will spend MUCH less time/money on SEO. The thought of doing less back linking is great because generating content is more fun than building links.

If you've made money in the past, you can do it again

Anyone who had sites making money is NOT down for the count. You have the knowledge and skills. It's just a matter of rebuilding ... this time better and doing it more efficiently. There are also niche opportunities in which to apply your skills.
