Not de-indexed so what IS this?

Hi,

I've been trying to work this out without success for too long now. So I come here to ask if anyone else can shed some light on this problem I am facing re one of my clients sites.

The site was doing find getting about 300 visitors per day, No 3 or 4 for its main k/wd with about 20 or so other kwds ranking well in keeping with a well made wordpress site with good SEO and good unique articles

Then mid-Arpil, suddenly everything flatlines according to Google Analytics leaving the last 10+ days with ZERO traffic according to GA.

Looking at the rankings the main kwd dropped to No61 from No3 or 4 but all the other kwds seem still to be in place.

So it has not been de-indexed or even seriously massively devalued in the rankings. Now I am even seeing people commenting on the site, yet GA continues to say there is zero traffic.

All the necessary elements are in place re T&Cs, contct us form, privacy policy, and I just added an anti-spam policy page under my opt-in form.

There is only one google adsense skyscraper, below the fold. No other affiliate links whatsoever, just a call to action to get involved in my clients course within the gardening niche.

Could it be that GA is not working? Any idea what is going on here?

More importantly, any suggestions how to get the traffic ball rolling again?

    If people are obviously commenting on your blog then Analytics is definitely acting up. You can check this by visiting the blog yourself with your computer and other computers/phones/etc. If you stats aren't changing then something up with the analytics.

    This timing coincides tto the beginning of the penguin update.
    This update features ongoing negative seo and over optimization penalties.

    What this means is google probably thinks your site is artificial and built as a marketing device. This could be a combination of on page elements being "over optimized" or your link structure being unnaturally over optimized as well.

    Unfortunately if you did not receive a message in your webmaster tools ( I didnt either for the one site of mine that fell) you really are flying blind.

    Also google is penalizing the smaller sites as they prefer to do business with the bigger players and eliminate microniche sites.

    My advice would be to do the 2 following things:

    First go over your onpage content, make sure you are not keyword stuffing and putting exact match phrases in every H-Tag etc. LSI can really helo you here.

    Second examine your link structure.I believe my site was penalaize because my link structure was too high quality if you can believe that. Make sure that you dont have a disproportionally high amount of links that use the exact match keyword as the anchor text.

    Also make sure your links are from diversified sources and quality levels.

    thanks - I think it might be the use of SENuke for gaining links with the exact match anchor text - if I run one or two nukes over the next month with lsi kwds instead?

    Will also change some of the exact match kwds on my subheadings etc to lsi terms.

    If there is something up with GA whats the best way to get Google to address this?

    This may be the affect of penguin update. Many SEO have faced this issue. If your client site is respected and online for 4-5 years then your keywords will be on the page 2-3 page after some days. That's all I can say.

    I'm chiming in on the same tip - the pages of mine that dropped seemed to be those with too much identical "perfect" anchor text, also too many of one type of link. Be interesting to see if building some links with LSI variation anchor text / other link types brings them back up... next task!

    Hi folks,

    I have subsequently found that the main fault lies with the fact that Google Analytics isnt working for me.

    I have visted my client's site many times in the last 10 days yet GA keeps reporting zero visitors. Also the site has received 4 independent comments in that time. So today I installed statcounter into the site and within a few minutes it was recording over 20 hits - so clearly GA is playing silly games with me.

    Im going to close down GA on all my sites and use statcounter instead. The plug in is so easy to set up as well!

    Google can go shove their GA where the sun dont shine.
