It really depends of you... What keyword are you targeting? Have they have a lot of competiotion or no? Do you know anything about SEO? You should focus first on learning more about SEO and then go out there and build your site...

The best way is to work hard on both on page and off page SEO. Here's the brief explanation:
    On Page SEO
    -Catchy Title With Keyword
    -Keyword Density of 1-3%
-1% of LSI (Latent Sematic Indexing) Keyword
    -Keyword in URL
    -Interlinking related pages

    Off Page SEO (Link Building)
    -Directory Submission
    -Social Bookmarking
    -Blog Commenting
    -Guest Posting
    -Forum Posting
    -Article Marketing
    -Web 2.0 Submission

There are way more techniques to rank high in SEO, but these are the main and popular ones. Read through the forum to fully understand them. Just bear in mind that Google want QUALITY contents and links.

I think it still matters, but you need not to be more than 2% in anycase.

Do not purchase a new domain unless you have to.

Optimize your site for your target audience, not for the search engines.

    Research your keyword phrases extensively.

Design and categorize your site architecture and navigation based on your keyword research.

Program your site to be "crawler-friendly."

Label your internal text links and clickable image alt attributes (aka alt tags) as clearly and descriptively as possible.

Write compelling copy for the key pages of your site based on your chosen keyword phrases and your target market's needs, and make sure it's copy that the search engines can "see."

Incorporate your keyword phrases into each page's unique Title tag.

Make sure your site is "link-worthy."

Don't be married to any one keyword phrase or worried too much about rankings.

I'm seeing half of the Pareto principle there, roady. Let me complete that for you. Yes, you're true, because Google's looking into onsite content more than those backlinks pointing to your site. So I agree with the part that 80% of the SEO credit goes to the on-page, while 20% goes to the off-page. On the other hand, the time you spend on your site would only be 20%, while the things you do outside your site, e.g. relationship building to make link building easier, reputation building through social media, etc. take 80% of your time.

Pinging is surely a great way to let search engines find pages that are deeper from the home page. I know this fact when I saw backlinks to my post. I remembered I did a lot of article marketing, but when I checked again, only 5 or 10 were listed. That sucked! After struggling for several hours finding help, I figured I had to ping. And now, the situation seems to improve a lot better.

First of all your site must be SEO friendly, that means it should be easily readable by search engines. Website should be easy to navigate; use keyword rich URL's for more benefit. Besides this forum posting, article submission, blogging also helps. Content is the king. You should update unique and quality content in regular basis.

The easiest way to get on top is to start Adsense PPC, and if you do it right you'll get on top within 5 minutes.
If you are unable to optimize it yourself, or having a highly competition keywords, you can hire an Adsense consultant.
Otherwise you would need to hire some SEO, and boost your self through organic search, though there is much more job will have to be done, and probably no warranties that you ever get to the top.

Go ping it. Bookmark it. Diig, reddit, stumbleupon it etc. Write an article in ezinearticles.com have two links one to your home page, and supporting page/the page you're ranking. Wait for it to get approved. Post that article from ezine to goarticles, articlebase, other directories.

Go make a squidoo lens, and a hubpage. Do the same thing. Have a link that leads to your page.

Ping it. Connect it to your Twitter.

Start a private blog network, or find someone with a private network.

Or just write really damn good content or have something really cool and it just backlinks on it's own cause people want to share it.
