Buy expired domains for adsense

I have been expired domains the past few days and have not been paying attention to the legality of it.
One of the domains i won gets about 1,500 hits a day and is in the alexa top 500,000. I checked it on the internet and its the page of a DJ. Whether he meant to let it go or not... who knows.
Was me doing this legal? I checked at the us trademarks website and did a search for the website name and did not find anything.
I plan to build out a small site for this domain just enough so that the adsense ads match what the inbound anchor texts say. Want the ads to be relevant to what people are going to the site for.
