Post "Penguin" Link Building Observations

So I'm going to keep this short and to the point, on what I have observed since the April 24th doomsday Penguin Algo Update.

Pre-Penguin:
- Social bookmarks helped boost one of my sites from #8 to #1.
- Tiered link building was the way to go

Post-Penguin:
- Only that 1 site that I used Social bookmarks on was hit by the update. All of my other sites that I have, that I didn't use Social bookmarks on, stayed neutral in their positioning.
- Tiered link building did not cause SERP drops.

TL;DR

Don't do direct Social bookmarks to your money site. Tiered link building (Link Pyramids) seem to be working great still.

Good stuff, thanks for the insight- especially since I was considering just this morning doing some more Social Bookmarking.

Yeah, still can't believe a majority of warriors still advice people to do social bookmarks as 1 of their main link building strategies. Social bookmarks work before but its ineffective after the recent update.

Next up would be article directories. hint: UAW

Tiered linking would be very hard for Google to put a stop too. It would take so much computing power for Google to start doing link analysis that deep.

I am sorry, but you cant base this whole thing on what you have done or haven't done with only a few sites.

There are so many factors that go into play here that it is impossible for anybody to pinpoint exactly what the problem is. Just because one of you site that you happen to use social bookmarks on got hit, doesn't mean social bookmark is the problem here.

I had installed a plugin a day before one of my sites got hit, I could as easily come here and say, dont install any plugins because thats the only thing different I had done with this one suite and it got hit!

You are putting too much emphasis on social bookmarks. I'm sure they will still work great but they need to be made a lot cleaner with a much more random anchor text and overall I think I will do smaller "blasts" of social bookmarks (not the 1-3k+ I used to do with BMD)

This is not an in depth case study. It is just something that I have observed across my handful of sites. I'm sure smaller niche sites with low competition could possibly move up in the SERPs from Social bookmarks, but as of now, I am not going to be directing social bookmarks to my sites.

I am aware this is not an in detail "Post Penguin Link Building Strategy" to rule the internet. This is solely based on my observations of the handful of sites that I am currently running and actively link building for.

I had a social adr account, and sent most of my bl to my 1st tier sites, didn't focus just on homepage though. Also sent to 2nd tier sites.

All my sites have taken a hammering, just not really sure what to do seo wise now... who does?

Ha! I did exactly the same as you - used social adr and social monkey to bookmark my money sites and the tier 1 (mainly web 2.0) sites. My money (adsense) sites have all been vaporized but my tier 1 sites have all jumped up the serps - so at least I getting some traffic from these.

I'm holding off doing anything drastic to my sites (other than stopping my social adr and the social monkey activities) - although I'm taking a long hard look at the content of the sites in terms of article length and key word densities. What keyword density should I be looking at?

The other (obvious) thing I'm doing is looking at the sites that are now ranking for MY keywords!

I am still building social bookmark links directly to my site and nothing happens after the penguin update. So I think there are still some things to consider.

Tiered link building is referring to a method of building links by layering your links in somewhat of a pyramid pattern. You have a first tier of links that point directly to your website. These are usually of higher quality (web 2.0/blog posts, original content).

Then you build links that point to that first tier of links. This is the second tier. These are often of lower quality (comment blasts, forum profiles, etc...).

Then you can have a third tier of links pointing to the second tier of links. These are often of lower quality as well.

Tiered linking still works quite well. You would be much better off building quality links throughout your tiered linking structure though. The links will get indexed faster, carry more ranking power and won't be deleted as often as building low quality links.

    Same observations.

Tiered linking still seems to be working well on my end. That said, it's only a matter of time before Google shakes things up even more. So always be on your toes.

    From my obervations :
    1. Press release backlinks still OK
    2. Submitting your site URL to document sharing sites like Scribd, Docstoc, Slideshare, still OK

    I have a different take ..

Bookmarking still works great, you just need to spin your description well and diversify the anchor text, it works ..

For those who are confused about diversifying the anchor text, don't just use one or two keyword for a backlink building campaign, Try atleast 10-15 keywords may be few keywords can be , check this out, know more etc , few others can be LSI keywords (keywords falls in same category)

I've been spinning my descriptions I'll have to go into my social adr account and add a lot more keywords to my anchor text.

      thanks for your input
