Time Spent Doing SEO Vs. Time to Rank

Hi, all.

One thing that I've noticed is that many members here say that it takes a few weeks to a few months to rank a site on the top of Google. However, what I'm wondering is if they are backlinking during this time, or do they just spend a few hours/day doing the backlinks and the rest of the time is spend waiting?

Thanks a lot to anyone who can clarify the difference between the time it takes and the amount of work to seo for a keyword.

    It's not that you spend 8 hours a day link building but backlinking an hour or so everyday in the beginning is good. For me, I can usually start ranking in 2-3 days for a keyword, depending on the competition of course. The thing that I've found to work pretty good for that is bookmarks, like pligg sites and all the major ones like reddit and digg.

    Oh, and I'm not sure if you meant it like this but you don't just wait of course. You're doing other things for the sites.

    Link velocity is important so whatever you start with you need to be able to maintain and then you can increase how many gradually. It depends on the competition of course but most of us do not spend all day back linking.

    Ranking and SEOing are totally different. SEO takes time and we as marketers in this fast paced world need to understand that.

    Thanks for the input. I agree that websites aren't "set it and forget it" at first. You have to put time into building them up, putting up new content, researching new keywords, analyzing traffic, etc. With all this to do, manual SEO for weeks on end seemed excessive.

    Now, when you say that you're not backlinking the whole time, but rather are waiting for the backlinks to show their effect, that makes sense that you could then focus on the other areas of your website.

    It depends of your own definition of SEO. Cause you can buy some tools, push a couple buttons, and still believe that's SEO When done properly, it takes a lot more time and resources (including money) then most people is used to.

    Its true that ranking of keywords depends on good link building but there are other factors also, some times we rank hard keywords easily and some times it takes months to rank low competitive keyword. Amount of work is not required in SEO, good content and good backlinks from authority sites are required.

    You should be back linking during that time knowing it will pay off. Thats where experience comes into play. If you are back linking front he right sources, you will eventually see the SEO benefits. I only use quality sources so I know that 9 times out of a 10, my sites will do well.

    It looks like, from what everyone is saying, that it's not as important how long you SEO and backlink as it is how you SEO/backlink.
