Penguin knocked me from #2 to page 2, but raised PR from 0 to 1

The first link in my sig file has been #2 on google for my keyword for the last few months, behind only the actual company's site. I've even had people call me and say I have the best information site for the business, even better than the company's.

The Panda Update knocked me to page 2 when it happened and Google traffic dropped to almost nothing. I'm not sure why, I don't think I did too much of the bad backlinking, but I did order a couple of backlinking gigs from fiverr last year. I don't think people that join would want to backlink to my site because I am their competition when they join, so it's not easy getting a lot of backlinks.

I've seen a lot of posts about the PR update so I thought I would check mine. Google raised the PR from 0 to 1 which kind of confuses me as to why they dropped it in the search rankings. I also improved a LOT in the Alexa rankings.

Hopefully Google is still tweaking the update and I will climb in the SE again.

Did this happen to anyone else?

PR is strictly a mathematical formula that determines your backlink power. It takes nothing else into consideration, like penalties or other algorithmic factors. You can have a PR 5 and still not rank for anything. Its almost a meaningless figure except when searching for where to get powerful backlinks from.

Google penguin gave preferences to more reputable site, that is the reason the company site is still there and your site is fallen. It is always better to have your brand, even if you promote other company's business, better to have your brand name for that service.

However, it is better to keep on getting backlinks with varied anchor text. Go for contextual backlinks.

Page rank has nothing to do with ranking and penguin did not give you a lower pr, it just so happened that the normal every 3 months or so pr update by google this time came right after penguin update.
